Learning Games for Intermediate and Secondary Students

English

1. Free Rice - This is a great site for students to practice and learn vocabulary words! Students are given a word and a list of possible definitions; they are to select the correct one, and if they do so, they earn grains of rice. These grains of rice are then (according to the website) donated to people in an underdeveloped country. The more correct answers students get, the higher the level, and word difficulty is increased. http://www.freerice.com/

2. Merriam-Webster Online Games – Citation – This site gives you several titles and descriptions to preview. Then, you must match the correct title with the correct description. If you do this correctly, you get a ÒCitation of Merit.Ó If you get one incorrect, you get a big red arrow, and a citation for reckless matching. For example, if the word given to you is Òpariah,Ó you must correctly match it to the definition of Òan outcast.Ó Several different time periods are covered through this game. Great for some extra time at the end of class. http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/freeplay.pl?game=ci
