Do You See What I See?!

A Web Drop-in Activity on Biased News for 8th Grade Journalism Students

Introduction:

Have you ever seen the exact same thing as someone else yet had a totally different explanation for what or why it happened?  While we like to think that truth is something universal, one only has to look at world events and international news reporting to see that there can be many truths.  For this activity you will be visiting many international news websites and comparing articles based on the same news events.

Directions:

1) On a blank sheet of paper create a Ven Diagram.  You will be using this to take notes for your comparison of two articles on the same news event.

2) Open a second browser window so you can switch between 2 different pages.

3) Choose any of the links below and look for an international or major news event.

4) Once you have located and read an article on an international or major news event switch to the other browser window and follow a link to any of the other pages.  Look for an article on the same news event.

5) Read the article and then fill out the Ven Diagram highlighting similarities and differences of the two articles. Be sure to document each news website and the article you reviewed.

6) If there are differences in the reporting, facts, or interpretations of the event brainstorm reasons that could explain this.

6) Be prepared to share your findings orally with the class.

You have 2 days to complete this assignment
