ROBINSON, Jackie

Abstract:

The article discusses the subtle and dramatic changes in the culture and environment in which the baseball game has been played over the last 75 years, as of February 2006. Aside from the changes in rules and equipment, there have also been signature events that have impacted or revolutionized the game. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 by becoming the first African American to play in the major leagues. The most significant rule change in the game came in 1974 when the designated hitter was introduced to the American League on an experimental basis, with the Yankees' Ron Bloomberg becoming the game's first designated hitter.
