Objective:
McDaniel graduate
students enrolled in SLM 521 will create Facebook accounts to aid in
communications during the semester and create a mode which to communicate
following the conclusion of this class.
Introduction:
Created by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, Facebook is an internet communication tool. Simply register as a new
user, for college or high school, and you will have the ability to search for others registered at
your school, establish how people know each other, and communicate with people
in your classes. To participate in Facebook, you
must be an affiliate (student, alumni, faculty or staff) to a school that is
supported by the Facebook
site. Facebook promotes itself as
“being a positive environment for peers to safely interact”. But like all things some people abuse this
system, but Facebook
has posted ways to deal with abuse including reporting explicit, hateful or
objectionable material.
Facebook
can be a tool that you use in this class to communicate with others enrolled
and also continue communications after the conclusion of the semester. Enjoy searching for people that you have
other classes with or that you went to undergrad with.
Activity:
If you are currently registered at Facebook, please update your
account to reflect enrollment in SLM 521.

If you are new to face book, explore the site to familiarize yourself with its
uses. When you are ready click on the
register button and begin the registration process (this is pretty easy). Simply fill in all fields found on the
registration page and click on the register now! button.
Once you are registered Facebook will instruct you to
check your e-mail for a confirmation e-mail. This contains a link to a Facebook web page with further
instructions. Create a profile and be
sure to list SLM 521 as a current class.
Be sure to save each page of the profile that you have created.
Assignment:
Your assignment for this activity is to register in Facebook and create
a profile including this class (SLM 521).
After registering and saving your profile, search for your instructor by
name. Once located “Poke him!” to let
him know that you are a register user for Facebook.
You will receive points once the instructor is “Poked”.
