Translation:

Five instructional situations in which a translation site would be a valuable tool for my classroom:

1. Reading assignments are sometimes difficult for the lower level learners. These translation sites would be very valuable to those students who need help beyond the Spanish- English dictionary.

2. Composition assignments are given in upper level classes for each lesson. Although students are discouraged from using the sites to translate the entire assignment, it could be helpful when a student has exhausted all resources and still doesn’t understand how to write something into the foreign language. If used for limited phrases and such, I would recommend using translation sites for these assignments.

3. With the project given in the Spanish 111 course, a Power Point in Spanish and a 2-5 minute presentation on a famous Hispanic person, a translation site may be of some help. Most students used resources on-line that were written in Spanish. They perhaps needed a translation site to gain a better understanding of the famous person to help with their Power Point and presentation. Likewise, when translating from English to Spanish for their presentations, some students would have benefited from having these sites available.

4. In the textbook used for the Spanish courses, the directions are often in Spanish for practice exercises. Students may need a service to translate these directions to better grasp what is needed to complete the exercises. Often students did the exercises wrong due to misunderstood instructions. Once the instructor explained what should have been done, the students’ eyes lit up and their mouths made a little ‘O’. Having a translation site could aid them with their assignments.

5. Students are also asked to create a running list of phrases or words needed for their majors that could be used in future employment. They could utilize the translation sites to help them complete these lists.

Betty, The Ugly debutara en ABC ABC confirms que la versisn en inglis de la popular novela colombiana Betty, la fea llegara a su pantalla en el segundo semestre de este aqo. El programa es producido por Salma Hayek y sera protagonizada por Amirica Ferrera (Real Women Have Curves). Betty, The Ugly estara ambientada en el competitivo mundo de la moda en Nueva York. Amirica Ferrera interpretara a Betty Suarez, una poco agraciada muchacha que es seleccionada por el dueqo de una revista de moda para ser la asistente de su hijo, quien pasara a hacerse cargo de la empresa. La znica razsn por la que Betty obtiene el trabajo es porque el dueqo de la empresa sabe que su hijo nunca se sentira atramdo por la joven. Y como ya sabemos gracias a sus buenas ideas y arduo trabajo Betty se gana la confianza de su nuevo jefe y se enamora de il.

NOTE: As a Spanish teacher, I found the Translation 2 site to be a better translation of both the text I wrote and that from People en espanol, ‘Betty, the Ugly’. Notice that both Babelfish and Systan did not have a translation for ‘soulmate’, but Translation 2 did.

I also found it fun to try several language of which I know nothing. In both Swedish and German, some words were recognized. However, the Greek translation was just for fun. Does anyone speak Greek here?
