Safety

Safety with computers and the Internet are essential when conducting class in a language laboratory that has access to the World Wide Web.  Consider this checklist before beginning a lab class:

1.  Have students willingly provided their log in information or do they hide it from you?

2.  Are students aware that at any time during lab that the instructor can access their computer or screen?

3.  Are students aware that at any time during lab that the instructor can ‘freeze’ their screen to prevent access to other programs?

4.  Do students have Internet access in their dorm rooms or their apartments? (Thus tempting students to access other programs during a lab class.)

5.  Are students turning in work at the end of class?  Make it a requirement that they turn in all work completed during the lab class. The amount of work may indicate that they were not working on the lab exercises.

Consider that the safety issues for college students may seem different as they are often treated as adults.  However, they are still subject and suspect to some of the same problems and issues as younger students. Therefore, having them sign an agreement between instructor and student may prevent or deter some problems.  It will also provide the administration with paper work should a situation arise in which you need to report the student.

The teacher/student agreement on the web site (http://safetyed.org) was modified to reflect the most prevalent or possible situations with the college students in the language laboratory. As young adults they should be the only one to sign the computer use agreement, as they need to be responsible for their own behavior.  Also access to parental signature is limited.
