Advocacy and Professional Development

Americans for the Arts, National Arts Education — This is an advocacy site for the arts in education. It contains data and research studies on why our kids need the arts. It has links to success stories, profiles, resources and campaign information. Date visited 2/12/06.

Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County This site provides information on grants and funding opportunities for local artists and organizations. The AHCMC is also an advocate for funding at the state and federal level. The resource page has a comprehensive list of Arts and Humanities Organizations, links to facilities, state and federal organizations, and an artist directory. National Art Education Association (NAEA) — This association site promotes art education through professional development, service, advancement of knowledge, and leadership. Contains information on research, annual convention, advocacy and publication. Date visited 2/12/06.

Maryland State Arts Council — This comprehensive site includes information on arts in schools grants, arts in education residency programs, other arts programs, news and publication information, and information for artists and art resources. Baltimore Clayworks — This web site contains information about all the happenings at this regional artist center. There are updates on classes, the gallery, community arts programs and occasionally featured artists. There is an e-zine and an online store. This is one of my favorite resources. Black Rock Center for the Arts This site contains information about the performances, gallery shows, and kids classes at the center in Germantown. It’s a good resource for class ideas and prices, as well as gallery visits. Date visited 2/13/06.

Kids "N" Clay, Baltimore, MD - This is a web site that markets after-school clay classes. This is a good resource for class ideas, samples and pricing. It contains a biography of ceramic artist Kevin Nierman and a link to buy his book. There is also a kid’s gallery. Date visited 2/12/06.

Rockville Arts Place — This web site provides information on classes for kids and adults, as well as gallery happenings and information on artists in residence. The name of the center has recently been changed to Metropolitan Center for the Visual Arts (VisARTS). Date visited 2/12/06.

Big Ceramic Store.com — This site is an online store for ceramics supplies such as clay, glazes tools, books, equipment. Good source for underglaze pencils. Also has How-To articles, glaze recipes, online discussion groups and lesson plans. Ships from California. Date visited 2/12/06.

Museum Resources

Museum Kids — This is a sub-site of the Metropolitan Museum of Art designed for kids. It has 10-15 very cool online lessons for students, parents and teachers on artists such as Van Gogh, Romare Bearden, Gilbert Stuart, Claus Oldenburg and van Bruggen. Age varies by project. NGA Kids — This site is a sub-site of the National Gallery of Art designed for kids. Includes 10 "teaser" activities and projects that teachers, parents and kids can access. On the Art Zone page, there are interactive projects including a "collage machine" where you can make art online. Appropriate age varies by project. Need Shockwave and Macromedia Flash.
