Introduction: The Internet offers us many
opportunities for learning and entertainment, but there are also dangers
involved with being online. We need to
be aware of risky behavior when we use the Internet and we all need to be safe
(and SMART) when we are online.
Fortunately, there are rules that we can all follow to keep us
safe.
Information: The Internet has many
helpful web pages to help you learn how to be safe when you are online. You will visit two websites today. The first website you will visit is Disney
Online’s CyberNetiquette Comix. The
second website you will visit is Cybersmart Kids
Online. You can find both of these
websites at the links below.
Disney Online’s CyberNetiquette Comix
Main Activity: Today, you will be working
in pairs. You will begin this activity
by visiting Disney Online’s
CyberNetiquette Comix page. Click on
the first comic – episode 1, “Who’s Afraid of Little
Sweet Sheep?” Once the comic loads, you
will need to click on the conversation bubbles to keep the comic going. If you need help, raise your hand and I will
come to help you. Watch and read the
comic carefully, because we will be discussing it later on.

Kids Online. Begin by clicking on the “cybersmart
kids” tab on the left hand side of the page.
Next, click on “Cyber Rules.”
Read these carefully taking turns reading with your partner. You may want to take notes to help you
remember. Next, click on “Chat Tips.” Again, read these tips carefully taking turns
and writing notes when needed. Click on
the “how cybersmart r u?” tab. Take the quiz together.
printer-friendly version of these directions.
Follow-up Activity: Now that you are an expert
at online safety, you need to educate other students about how to stay safe on
the Internet! With your partner, make a
poster about online safety. You may
include tips and/or information about dangers.
You may also concentrate on one particular danger or tip. It’s up to you! Just make sure that your
poster is colorful, organized, attention-grabbing, and educational! We want
everyone at
