Absolutely Free Clip Art

It is somewhat challenging to find the category list (animations- 26 subcategories, backgrounds- 38 subcategories, clipart -21 subcategories, lines-4 subcategories) on this home page. Once you find it (in the upper left hand corner of the screen), the subcategories are interesting and the images are easy to locate. There is no way to search for a specific type of image other than its category. Images are not vast in number or complexity, but they are all free! The user has to look for the images as they seem to be hidden behind link after link! Keep looking, you’ll find some good ones!

Getty Images

This site is the best I found for photographs. It has a “royalty free” zone for free photos in addition to having low cost photos available. It also has illustrations with the option to search photos and illustrations or just one or the other. It also has a ‘clarify’ feature when searching to check the meaning and usage of the word the user is searching. For example, I put in “math” and it asked if I meant ‘the academic subject’, or a mathematical symbol. It has many search criterion which allow for a search for exactly what the users needs. Search categories include free or not free, illustrations or photographs, four choices of orientation, and black and white versus color images.

This site offers a large array of images without cost or registration.

AAA ClipArt

This site has over 40 categories including children, education, food, and politics. While the category headings are varied, there is no other way to narrow a search on this site. Membership is required to receive the full benefits of the site, but many images are available without becoming a member. One of the stated membership benefits is no pop up ads. There are many on this site!

This site also offers many links to other clip art sites within its own site.

Google Images

This site is the best search engine for finding images from various places on the Web. With seemingly unlimited access and categories, this site lists images meeting the search criteria. After deciding on an image, the user may return to the original location of the image to see it in its original context and often is able to find additional images on the same theme. No cost or registration is required to use the search engine, although individual images may require cost or registration to use.
