Elective 2 - Instructional Modifications

Special Needs: low reading level & attention deficits

Student with a low reading level and with attention deficits present a challenge to teachers when implementing web-based instruction. The following is a list of instructional modifications that may be used to help in those two special needs areas.

Low Reading Ability

Opportunity to be read to while completing a web-based activity.

Having a partner of a higher reading ability.

Using software that reads aloud to the student.

Access to software/ sites which will allow the student to practice and learn new sight words, letter sounds, etc. and practice skills online.

Giving the opportunity to use and complete graphic organizers while collecting information from / conducting research on websites.

Software that highlights each word to be read to assist student in tracking the words on the page.

Make font larger on web pages so student is able to use reading strategies such as finding chunks in a word or reading on more easily.

Seating in close proximity to the teacher so the teacher is able to help read if needed.

Frequent feedback when student is meeting the teacher’s expectations on the assignment.

Attention Deficits

Clearly defined limits - specific sites to go to/ programs to work on

Using software that reads aloud to the student while sitting at the computer.

Being given frequent breaks from sitting in front of the computer.

Frequent feedback on the job the student is doing, level of focus while working, etc. while sitting at the computer.

Using sites which provide self checks so the student knows if the answer is right or wrong immediately.

Working in a quiet environment with minimal distractions.

Being given encouragement for participating appropriately and using the equipment appropriately.

Teacher should give concrete examples (use manipulatives) to show the student what he might encounter while practicing a skill on the internet.

Set a timer next to the computer so that a time limit is set in which a task must be completed.

Encourage the student to verbalize the information he is finding on the websites.
