Drop In # 2 - Angles/ Protractors

Pre teaching: Using this site, teachers can introduce the use of a protractor and students can practice basic skills.

In this activity, you will use what you know about measuring angles with a protractor to explore more angles.

1. Go to this site.

http://www.amblesideprimary.com/ambleweb/mentalmaths/angleshapes.html

2. Find a picture that is just a triangle (there are three). Measure the angles of the three triangles you find there and record your results in the table below. To find another triangle, click “Change the Activity.”

Measure of angle two

Measure of angle three

3. Complete the shaded area of the table by calculating the sum of the angles for each triangle.

4. What did you discover about the sum of the angles in a triangle?

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

5. Predict - Do you think the sum of the angles in a quadrilateral is the same as the sum of those in a triangle?

6. Test your theory by measuring the square and rectangle on this web site. Then draw and measure other quadrilaterals in your math tablet to check your theory. Collect your data in your math resource tablet. Be ready to share your findings!
