Purpose:  This bibliography serves as a resource for all levels of occupational therapy professionals.  It is useful for the student who is interested in learning everything from the role of all disciplines on the treatment team to treatment resources.  It is also helpful for the occupational therapist that is interested in changing professional practice settings.

 

The Interdisciplinary Treatment Team:  Who makes up the team and what is their role?

 

American Occupational Therapy Association:  This site provides information regarding the activities of the national office including legislative as well as practice updates.  It also contains links to listservs for each of the practice areas of occupational therapy practitioners and students.  You can also find links to the state level organization as well as licensure requirements and procedures.  It is a fantastic resource for the general public who wants more information regarding services provided by OT as well as the practicing therapist who wants to stay current.  Date Visited 5/21/05.

The American Physical Therapy Association:  This site contains the national mission, vision, and value for the national association.  It also contains information regarding the scope of practice for this profession.  It is a particularly interesting website for occupational therapy professionals as it allows the individual to view continuing education offerings that may be of interest as well as view current initiatives by the physical therapy profession. American Speech Language Hearing Association:  This is the site for the national organization of Speech Language Pathologists.  It contains an overview of the professional scope, links to continuing education, and legislative initiatives of the profession. This site is of particular interest to occupational therapy professionals as it illustrates the potential collaboration between the professions.  It is written for the general public as well as the professional.  Date visited 5/21/05.

Nursing World:  This is the official website for the American Nurses Association. It addresses the secondary education student who is interested in the profession as well as the nursing professional.  It contains information regarding professional practice standards, legislative initiatives, and current trends in nursing.  It also provides information on upcoming educational offerings as well as their journal for professionals.  Date visited 5/21/05.

American Association for Respiratory Care:  This is the site for the professional organization of respiratory therapists.  It provides information regarding education, career opportunities, legislative activities and trends in the profession.  This is a useful site for occupational therapist to gain a better understanding of this member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and learn how they can work collaboratively with their peer.  Date visited 5/22/05.

Resources for Occupational Therapists Working in Psychiatric Settings

 

All Psych Online:  This is a virtual psychology classroom.  It contains descriptions of all of the psychiatric disorders listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV).  It is written for students in secondary education through professional.  It is a wonderful tool for the occupational therapist, as they need to have a baseline understanding of the patient’s disease in order to develop an appropriate treatment plan.  Date visited 5/21/05.

Mayo Clinic:  This website is for the professional health care provider.  While the home page is a wonderful resource for a variety of diseases and conditions, this particular link provides information specifically on dementia.  It assists the reader in differentiating between Alzheimer’s, the most common cause of dementia, and other etiologies of dementia. This site is of particular interest to Occupational Therapists as patients who are in psychiatric settings as well as geriatric settings often have a dual diagnosis of dementia.  Date visited  5/22/05.

Medline Plus Schizophrenia:  This site is designed for health professionals working in the field of psychiatry.  While the homepage contains links to a multitude of diagnosis, this specific page provides information regarding etiology, signs and symptoms and treatment interventions for individuals with schizophrenia. This is a common diagnosis seen by occupational therapists working in psychiatric settings. Date visited 5/22/05.

Alzheimer’s Association:  This is the website for a non-profit organization serving professionals working with Alzheimer’s patients as well as their families and caregivers.  It provides very helpful information regarding the disease process, the impact on the patient and family, and educational resources for its members.  There are links to current events and newspaper articles.  Date visited 5/22/05

Resources for Occupational Therapists Working in Physical Disability Settings

 

The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists:  This site was developed in order to support the professionals that are working in the field of driver rehabilitation.  It contains information on the certification process, association activities and past journal articles.  It is a valuable site for the occupational therapy student and practitioner as it provides information regarding educational offerings and legislative activities related to this specialty area.  Date visited 5/22/05.

National Lymphedema Network:  This site is designed for patients who have lymphedema as well as the health care professional interested in gaining increased knowledge regarding the disorder and treatment options.  There is a tremendous amount of educational information that therapist can use for themselves or refer their patients to.  It also contains an area where individuals can post questions for the experts.  Date visited 5/22/05

American Spinal Cord Injury Association:  This site was developed for the health care professional that works with individuals who have sustained a spinal cord injury.  It describes the mission of the organization, information regarding educational offerings, and the process for joining the organization.  It is helpful for occupational therapists to use this site as a resource as it defines standards for evaluating and treating patients who have a spinal cord injury.  Date visited 5/22/95.

Brain Injury Association of America:  This site is was developed for the health care professional that works with individuals who have sustained a brain injury as well as survivors and care givers of individuals with a brain injury.  This site contains information regarding treatment, research, education and legislative activities. It also links to local chapters of the organization.  This website is speech-enabled with Browse-aloud and is able to read the text aloud.  This is particularly helpful to patients who may have visual perceptual deficits and are not able to read at this time. National Stroke Association:   This site addresses the patient who has suffered a stroke, family members and health care professionals.  There are specific links depending on your reason for visiting this site.  Issues such as prevention, acute care treatment, rehabilitation, and research are addressed on this site.  This is particularly valuable to occupational therapists because stroke is the number one diagnostic group treated by OT’s.  Date visited 5/22/05

Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association:  While this site is intended for the health care professional working with individuals who have sustained a central nervous system injury it is also useful for the family member of the patient.  It provides both general and detailed information regarding this treatment intervention.  It also provides information regarding training and certification opportunities.  Date visited 5/22/05.

Handwriting Without Tears:  This site is directed to occupational therapists as well as elementary school teachers. It describes a program that was developed by an occupational therapist to improve the fine motor control in students that will lead to improved handwriting.  While the goal of the site is to sell the product, it contains many fundamentals of the program that can be immediately implemented by therapists in treatment and the educator in the classroom.  Date visited 5/22/05.

Americans with Disability Act:  This is a technical site developed for the adult public who is interested in understanding and complying with the ADA.  It contains information regarding design standards, technical assistance and enforcement of the law.  This is of interest to occupational therapists as they are frequently asked to consult on in home accessibility as well as community accessibility.  Date visited 5/22/05.
