My students are going to be reading the book Jacob Have I Loved. The story is about two sisters that lived on Tilghman Island located of the coast of Crisfield Maryland. The island is a very important part of the setting. The population is only about 60, the main industry is cultivating from the ocean. Because of the small township the island has developed a lot of its own traditions. The people are very simple, as is their lifestyles. My first two dropins will deal with the book and activities centered around it.

Students as you know the book that we are about to read is different then any of our prior stories. It takes place on a small island off the coast of Crisfield Maryland. The population is very small and the town’s people have developed their own way of life, which may be very different from ours. In order for you to be more familiar with the setting of the book and the people, we are going to take a fieldtrip to the island. Before we can plan a fieldtrip we must know how to reach our destination. You are to use one of the following search engines to determine the directions we would use to reach Tilghman Island. You must leave form South Hagerstown High School and reach the shore of Crisfield Maryland. Once you have reached Crisfield we will take a ferry over to the Island. That is the only way to get there. As you research this task you must calculate the number of miles, and how long it would take us to reach our destination. Using this information you are to then write to exact directions we would take. You must decide which means of transportation is most cost effective.
