Lewis & Clark Scavenger
Hunt Bingo Game!
![]()
Based on the National Geographic Society’s Lewis & Clark Interactive Journey
at:: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/lewisandclark/index.html
Learning Objective: Students will understand the breadth and
panorama of Lewis & Clark’s discoveries.
I have designed a fun
activity to encourage students to complete the interactive journey. It is part scavenger hunt, part bingo – but
mostly a fun way to keep track of what you learn!
Disclaimer: all artwork is either free clipart or
reproduced here with
the sole intention of
getting people interested in the website above.
All you need to do is click
“Begin the Journey” on the National Geographic link. Pay attention to the artifacts – many of them
are referenced by the clue on the clue chart.
When you find an artifact that matches the clue, you may mark that
numbered box on your bingo card(s).
Note: unlike regular Bingo,
you must “WIN” on all 4 cards to finish the game. When you fill out a row either diagonally,
horizontally or vertically on a card, call out “Lewis & Clark Bingo!” The teacher will come and verify that you
have found the correct artifacts. There
is no need to find more on that card.
You will receive 5 points per card.
(Alternatively, if doing it by yourself, there is no need to call out – just
fill out the cards.)
Note: If you have not gotten a FREE space by
completing the quiz, then you don’t have the FREE space to use – you must work
around this square and find another combination.
Besides the website, the
components of the game are:

A short quiz
on the origins of the journey,
which will earn
you a “FREE” space on your bingo cards
A list of 50
clues for artifacts & other “finds” made by the intrepid explorers
A set of 4 Bingo cards that you can access and print out
L&C Bingo Card 1
L&C Bingo Card 2
L&C Bingo Card 3
L&C Bingo Card 4
(click on the buttons for
the information)
(Note to teachers – I am
thinking this might be fun if you could bring the whole class to a computer
center so as to make the journey more like “real” bingo in that the kids could
call out when they “win” -- but I have
designed it for a standalone activity in any case. You may email me at hardsnorko@aol.com for a list of correct
artifacts.)
Example

Ok, let’s say you have a
square with this in it: 51
(Really, the list stops at
50).
You are checking out the
artifacts and look at the clue:
51. a perennial herb of the aster family
You come across this
artifact:

Which is the “Leafy or
Dwarf Thistle”

Write this on the artifact
sheet, cross out the “ 51” box, 51
and write the artifact
(number & name) on the bingo card.
Four more artifacts in a
row and you are done that card!
Simple? Fun? Try
it and see! Don’t forget to enjoy the
journey along the way!
