Resources for All Teachers

Discoveryschool.com-  This is a wonderful site for finding lesson plans, student activities, and educational links.  You can search this site for everything from clip art to use in the classroom to brain booster activities to get students thinking while having fun.  You can browse lesson plans by grade (K-12) and subject.  The literature lesson plans provide objectives, activities, and links to content specific sites to learn more information about the author/work.  Within the lesson plan pages you can link onto Teacher Tools that allow you to create your own worksheets, plans, puzzles, and quizzes.  This is a great site for any teacher.  Site last visited 9/20/03.

Thinkport-  This site not only provides excellent resources for lesson plans, but it also provides wonderful tools for building your own creative instructional tools.  From “Think Classroom”, you can search for lessons from pre-school to higher education levels and in a variety of subjects.  These plans include activities, links to other pertinent sites, objectives, discussion questions, and assessment tools.  You can also build your own lessons, activities, and projects.  This site is also great because it offers an assortment of online field trips that could be used in a number of subjects across the grade levels.  This site is great for teachers new and old and is a wonderful resource for incorporating multidisciplinary studies/activities within your content.  Site last visited 9/20/03.

Inspiration Software, Inc.- This is an outstanding site for creating useful visual aids to use in the classroom.  Inspiration allows you to download a free 30-day trial to explore and experiment with their wonderful tools to help you design and build your own instructional tools for the classroom.  Inspiration is geared toward secondary education (grades 6 and up), but they also have a link for Kidspiration that provides you with tools for working within the elementary setting.  The program is easy to use, has great graphics, and makes creating worksheets really fun.  Site last visited 9/23/03.

New-Teacher.com- This site provides great links and information for new teachers.  This site is appropriate for any new teacher, grades K-12, and includes information/tips for setting up your classroom, finding a job, becoming a teacher, and help on how to teach.  This site even includes links to articles about new teachers and resources for the new teacher.  It’s a very helpful and useful site for all new teachers.  Site last visited 9/21/03.

Resources for English Teachers

Web English Teacher- This site is could be an English teacher’s best friend.  This resource can be used for grades K-12 and provides lesson plans, activities, discussion topics, and great links to other educational websites/information.  This site covers everything from grammar, vocabulary, and critical thinking to poetry, literature, drama, Shakespeare, and even Yearbook.  You can find entire lesson plans, activities, videos, resources, etc.  It is a very useful site in creating a unit/lesson plan, spicing up an old plan, getting new ideas, or just learning new information to share with your class.  Site last visited 9/20/03.

Online Poetry Classroom- This site is a terrific resource for secondary teachers who are going to teach poetry in their classroom.  This site provides everything from unit/lesson plans, to activities and tips, to in depth biographies, works, and pictures of over 450 poets.  This site is easy to navigate and tremendously useful.  Site last visited 9/26/03.

Resources for English Teachers & Students

Merriam-Webster Online-  This is a great resource for teachers and students alike.  This site allows you to look up definitions or use the thesaurus at the click of a button.  This is a great tool for learning/researching vocabulary terms and writing papers.  It also provides fun educational activities including a variety of word games, a word of the day link, and a “phat new words” link that defines contemporary slang that students would find particularly “phun”.  The activities/games are a bit difficult and would be most appropriate in the upper secondary levels, but the dictionary/thesaurus is simply enough for the lower grade levels.  Site last visited 9/20/03.

The Online English Grammar- This site is great for elementary or secondary students who want to learn more about, or are having trouble with, grammar.  You can search alphabetically or by subject to get definitions of different parts of speech and examples of proper use.  Teachers could also use this site to create grammar worksheets and drills.  This site also offers free interactive tests and games to practice and improve your skills.  Site last visited 9/26/03.

American Literary Classics- This site is a great resource for students or teachers who are looking to find full texts online.  This site offers a plethora of American short stories, poems, and even novels.  Elementary or secondary teachers can step outside the bounds of their textbooks to add additional literature to their courses.  Students can search for literature for book reports, essays, and leisure without leaving their homes.  All the greats are included and the library is constantly growing.  Site last visited 9/23/03.

Web Resources on African American Writers and Literature- This site is an outstanding source for secondary teachers or students researching African American literature, authors, or culture.  It includes a multitude of links that provide information on African American culture, biographical information, history, literary movements and genres, periodicals, and literature.  This is a great starting point for any research on the topic and it provides a wealth of sources to find virtually any information you could hope to learn about African American literature.  Site last visited 9/25/03.

Poets of the Harlem Renaissance and After- This site posted by the Academy of American Poets is a wonderful source for secondary students/teachers who want to learn more about the writers of the Harlem Renaissance, or locate information for a lesson.  It provides brief biographies of the authors of the time, poetry texts, and best of all a “listening booth”.  The listening booth allows you to listen to a myriad of poems read by the authors themselves.  This is an excellent tool to use in the classroom, particularly to demonstrate the strong influence of jazz and voice in the poetry of the Harlem Renaissance.  Site last visited 9/25/03.

Shakespeare’s Life and Times Home Page- This site provides information on everything you ever wanted to know about Shakespeare, his works, and the world he lived in.  Any elementary or secondary teacher/student studying Shakespeare can find a myriad of useful information at this website.  This site includes a biography of Shakespeare from birth to retirement, a wealth of information about the society and history of his time, analysis of his literature, pictures, audios, and full text documents.  Everything you could want to learn through just this site!  Site last visited 9/23/03.

Exploring The Catcher in the Rye- This site permits secondary students, or teachers, studying J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye to bring the text into the real world.  You can search a book index to find out about characters, events, and places in the novel, or even read post-traumatic stress disorder and the role it could have played in Holden’s depression.  The best thing about this resource, however, is that it provides maps and photographs of New York City and the places Holden explored during his three-day journey.  Students could explore these photos privately, or teachers could incorporate them into the lesson or create a bulletin board.  Site last visited 9/26/03.

Jane Austen:  Chronology and Periodization- This is a wonderful site for secondary students or teachers who wish to immerse themselves in the world of Jane Austen to better understand her work.  This site provides biographical information, in depth analysis of her works, great information about the society and history of the times, and discusses Austen’s literary reputation.  The best part about this site is the wealth of information it provides about Austen and her work including pictures of Austen, fashions of the times, and even jokes.  Site last visited 9/23/03.

All Poe- As the title implies, this site is all about the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe.  This site is extremely helpful to any teacher or student studying Poe.  There are not many visual/photos, but the information itself is worth the visit to this site.  It includes a biography of the writer’s life, answers questions about the mystery and controversy surrounding Poe’s life, offers synopses, discussions, and critiques of his work.  Site last visited 9/23/03.

A Guide to The Great Gatsby- This site provides outstanding links to explore F. Scott Fitzgerald’s life, times, and his novel The Great Gatsby.  The link to USC’s site on Fitzgerald is extremely interesting and informative, including many photos, video, and sounds of the author.  There are also links to great sites about the Jazz Age and even educational trivia about the text.  This is a great site for secondary students and teachers learning about this classic American author his work.  Site last visited 9/22/03.

Timeless Hemingway- This superb site is dedicated to the life and works of Ernest Hemingway.  You can search within the site on any topic concerning the great American author.  This is a great source for locating photographs of Hemingway (even many baby pictures), learning about his life, his art, and his family.  This site is great for any secondary student or teacher learning about Hemingway.  Site last visited 9/25/03.

William Faulkner- This site is perfect for any secondary student or teacher who wants to learn more about the life of William Faulkner or any of his literary works.  This site includes everything from discussions of his writing, to pictures from his life, to the floor plans of his home.  You can “visit” his home in Oxford, Mississippi or enter the “Play Room” for a bit of Faulkner trivia.  This site offers just about everything and anything you wanted to learn about William Faulkner.
