Learn what makes a nutritious meal! Create menus for your family.

Introduction

Have you ever wished that you could determine what you ate for a day? Use the internet to find the foods that would make a balanced meal. You can use the food pyramid and the meal guidelines to help you. Remember you are creating nutritious meals for your entire family.

Task

Determine what is required to create a nutritious meal.

  • Fill out your own food pyramid

(Know the 5 food groups and how many servings you should have from each)

  • Determine what makes a serving.
  • What is required in meals that your school serves?
  • Create a healthy breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner to be served to your family.

Process

Using the sites listed below and what we have learned in class, create a healthy breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner menu. We will submit your lunch menu to the school cafeteria. Work with your partner to design the menus.

You will present your healthy meal choices to the class by displaying them on a plate using play food or you may draw or use clip art food to display your menu. Each meal must be displayed on a separate plate. A list of the four meals and their contents should be prepared to turn in. Make sure you include items from 4 out of the 5 food groups in each meal.

  1. First you will be assigned a partner.
  2. Choose a role as either a parent or a child.
  3. Look at the websites listed below.
  4. Complete your food pyramid handout.
  5. Over the course of the next day keep a record of what you eat using the Food Survey. Each time you eat a food from a certain food group put a tally mark in the box. At the end of 24 hours write the total from each group in the total column.
  6. Determine a school menu for breakfast, lunch, and snack.

Here are the links that you can use to search for the information you will need to create healthy and balanced meals. Everyone must look at the six sites listed below. Then you may also search for your own information.

The Food Guide Pyramid – Learn how much of each food group you should eat every day.

Serving Guidelines – Here is how much you need to have one serving

Fast Food Facts – Did you know how unhealthy fast food is?

5 a Day Facts – You’ll be surprised by what kids really eat.

Healthy Snacks – Here are some healthy snack ideas.

Easy Snacks – Easy to make snacks that mom or dad can help you with.

You may also search for information using Yahooligans or One Key.

Evaluation

When your group has completed the entire process you must be prepared to turn in a written list of the meals you designed. You must have your table of the foods you ate and your completed food guide pyramid. I will also be evaluating you on the quality of your presentation.

Conclusion

By completing this webquest you will have learned the five food groups, the number of servings you need each day, what makes a serving, how to create healthy meals, and you will reflect how you eat.

Here are some things to think about.

·        When you kept track of what you ate, did you eat things from each group?

·        Will you choose better foods to eat now?

·        What did you learn about the way you currently eat?

·        Will you choose to change anything about how you eat after completing this webquest?
