The Best Search Engines
A collection of search
engines that I like
Note: These engines search other search
engines and then combine the results
Dogpile This site
searches the most popular search engines including Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask
Jeeves. It has a nice feature that notifies you if your search has related images,
audio, or video available. It also offers keywords related to your original
search, as well as the chance to compare the results of different engines.

Ixquick This meta search engine is quick, and offers an interesting
rating system based on the results. It gives each site one star for search
engine that listed it in their own top ten. As different engines have different
criteria for their rankings, this system offers a reliable way to find a
consensus choice. http://www.us.ixquick.com/
General Search Engines:
Google This is
probably the best known search engine as well as the most popular. It offers a
fast, reliable search with results displayed based on popularity. The I'm
Feeling Lucky button allows the user to go directly to the most popular
website based on the search criteria. http://www.google.com/
Grokker This search engine relies primarily on Yahoo!
for its search results, but it is the way it presents that information that
makes it unusual. The results are first grouped into categories and then
displayed in a zoomable map. This visual search engine is a truly unique way to
seek out information. http://www.grokker.com/
Kid-Friendly Search Engines
KidsClick!
This site, which was
created by librarians, is set up like a library reference directory and has the
same categories as listed in the Dewey Decimal System. The difference is that
categories are listed in a kid-friendly format and instead of finding book
titles when they do a search, the student will find links to numerous relevant
web sites. http://www.kidsclick.org/
Ask
Jeeves Kids This
service is similar to the regular Ask Jeeves site in that it offers a
easy to use interface in which you simply enter a question and the search
engine directs you to a website for the answer. As it is a site for children,
answers have been screened for appropriateness and it uses CyberPatrol
(internet safety software) to screen out unsuitable web sites.

News Search Engines
Yahoo!
News This website
has a newspaper-like front page with lead stories accompanied by photographs as
well as video and slides when available. The search engine scans thousands of
news sources for relevant results and also provides links to related blog
entries. http://news.yahoo.com/
Columbia Newsblaster This interesting site offers a summary
of news stories based on a computer scan of the top news services. Readers have
the option of clicking on the sites that the summary is based on.

AlltheWeb This
site offers a simple but clean interface and quick results with a one click
search. Unlike some sites which only offer image searches, this site offer
results to queries for pictures, video or audio. http://www.alltheweb.com/
Lycos This
website has the ability to search for all types of multimedia. It also offers
extras such as the ability to see previews of the latest movies releases, play
