An internet audio sampler
The
following sites are good resources for audio material:
Music of the Civil War This site, The Authentic History Center, offers a collection of Civil War era
music. It offers historical recordings related to that time period as well. In
addition, it has numerous recordings and music from various periods in history,
from the Revolutionary War up to and including the attacks of 9/11. http://www.authentichistory.com/civilwar/sounds/index.html
Music and Dance From Old Ireland The commercial website Calabash Music, offers this sample of
traditional Irish music. The downside of this site is that if you want to hear
more than a sample of a song you have to pay 99 cents for it. But that fact is
more than made by the breadth of music offered and the ease of navigation. The
interface consists of maps of the continents which in turn leads you to the
country of your choice. This site offers a simple way to get a flavor of the
music of different countries and cultures. http://musicanddancesireland.calabashmusic.com/
Talk Radio News Service This site offers audio clips on
current events from talk show radio programs as well as excerpts from
governmental hearings and debates. The site includes a search feature to find
specific topics. http://talkradionews.com/audio/index.php
LibriVox Devoted to the "acoustical liberation of books in the
public domain", this site offers an ever-expanding list of books in audio
form. Limited to books not under copyright, it nevertheless offers many
classical literature readings, from Alice
in Wonderland to Frankenstein.
The books are available both as streaming audio and as a download. http://librivox.org/librivox-catalogue/
Poetry Out Loud This web page is produced by the BBC
and offers a selection of well-known poets reading their own works. As a bonus,
they also offer a link to interviews they have done with some of these famous
poets. http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/poetry/outloud/
