Clip Art

Discovershcool.com – This site has over 3000 images, which compared to other sites, is not a large number.  However, this is an education web site and therefore would actually be a subtopic for the larger image search sites.  The clip art is subdivided into 20 categories.  All images on this site have been illustrated by one individual.  The site includes a link on how to use clip art with suggestions for its use.  Clear instructions are given for inserting images into word documents, and on to your hard drive.  Another link takes you to copyright and use information which clearly explains the legal use of the images.   Navigation is smooth and quick.  Once in a specific category, the user is informed of the number of images on each page and the total number of images for that category. The user has the option of viewing all images on one page which saves time when browsing. Date visited – 6/06/06.  http://school.discovery.com/clipart/

Microsoft Clip Art and Media   - This site has 48 categories, and provides over 1200 images in the academic category alone.  Naturally some of the same pictures fit into many categories.  You can narrow your search by typing in a more specific keyword as a subtopic of the category.  You can get a larger preview picture if needed.  The images are downloaded by first clicking on the pictures you want, and this gets them into your selection basket.  When you have made your selections you download them.  There is a limit on how many you can download at a time but you are not informed of this until you try to download them.  As I recall you can download 12 at a time.  I have Microsoft Office 2003, so I don’t know if this happens in earlier versions, but Microsoft categorizes the pictures when they download.  You will only be asked the first time you download.  Pictures are easy to access and downloading is fast and easy. The Big List of Clip Art Topics - A – There is an A-Z browser on this site to help you find what you’re looking for. The site has many images, although it does not appear to have as many as the other sites in this list. There was no number specified on the site, but there were about 50 pictures under the letters A and S, and much less under the letters I and Z. The site does not provide education or academic images specifically, but the holiday, seasonal, animal and any number of other images would still be useful to teachers. Navigation through this site is a little difficult and the user has to wade through a lot of junk on each page – junky advertisements, besides the ones for clip art purchases. A distinction is made between clip art and original clip art on this site, and the user must get permission to use the original. The illustrator of the clip art is the same for all of the clip art on the site.  Directions are given for downloading images, and it is very easy to do.  Date visited – 6/06/06.  http://webclipart.about.com/od/webclipartatoz/l/blnettop.htm

Teacher Files, Free Educational Clip Art – This is a useful site for teachers to look for clip art, since all the clip art is educational.  There are 10 categories of clip art, plus a general education category.  The number varies in how many images are available in each category, but the larger ones have around 50 images. Besides images, there are icons, cartoons, and text boxes to download.  Additionally, the site has educational headlines, theme and subject signs, month and year signs, clip art phrases and page dividers.  These images are free, but the site would like to be given credit when the images are used. This would be a valuable resource for any teacher because of the variety of types of clip art available. Date visited – 6/07/06. http://www.teacherfiles.com/clip_art.htm

Hassle Free Clip Art – The images on this site can be downloaded for personal and commercial use, as long as the images are used to enhance a project.  Images are to be downloaded one image at a time and never a full page download.  There are 21 cartoon categories and 21general categories, one of them being school. Clicking on the thumbnail opens the image so the user can see what it really looks like.  The images are appealing and easy to download.  This is a useful site for teachers.  Date visited – 6/07/06. http://www.hasslefreeclipart.com/page_clipart.html
