Summary and Purpose:

 

The purpose of this bibliography is to provide resources for college students who are preparing to become teachers.  The information should be useful during their internships, student teaching, and as beginning teachers.  These sites should be useful to interns, beginning teachers, and teachers already in the field.  The bibliography is divided into the following categories:

 Professional Resources

 

National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) – This is the site of the agency that provides accreditation in teacher education programs.  The site provides resources for ensuring high quality teaching and teacher preparation.  Standards for all disciplines of instruction are linked to this site, including the Standards for Professional Development Schools (PDS).   Resources for meeting the standards are included.  There is a very helpful site map.  This site would be a reference for college students interning in PDS schools, for their mentors, and PDS liaisons.  Date visited – 5/27/06.  http://www.ncate.org

 

National Education Association - This NEA site provides information about everything in education from grant writing to issues in education to summer reading for teachers.  It advocates quality education for all children and the advancement of the teaching profession.  On this site you can find issues in education and links to research and resources for the classroom.  There is a teacher page which includes a lesson on timely events.  Besides that, there are ideas for lessons, classroom management, and a really nice section for teacher help and ideas, Works4Me.  Finally, there is a support component for parents and community.  Date visited – 5/27/06.  http://www.nea.org/index.html  

 

Maryland State Department of Education – This site should be helpful to interns and beginning teachers, as well as experienced teachers.  It has information regarding teacher certification, professional development for teachers, and some lesson seeds for teachers to use.  There is a good lesson provided for social studies teachers to use when teaching about D-Day which includes a video documentary produced by Comcast.  Date visited – 5/31/06.  http://www.marylandpublicschools.org/msde

 

School Improvement in Maryland – This is a great site for teachers in Maryland to find out about state, county, and school MSA scores, information on analyzing the scores, and tips on how to improve instruction.  Teachers are provided with instructional strategies, MSDE exemplars (model lessons), and tips from content specialists.  Something on this site that should be helpful to interns in Maryland schools is the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC), since this is the curriculum that is aligned to what they will be teaching in their schools.  Date visited – 5/27/06.  http://mdk12.org

 

National Association for Beginning Teachers – This purpose of this site is to encourage new teachers to maintain their enthusiasm by helping to provide them with the tools and skills necessary.  This is a non-profit organization and membership is free.  There are links to resources and workshops for beginning teachers (which are not free).  There is a link to a beginning teachers toolbox, which is full of resources.  Date visited – 5/31/06. http://www.beginningteachers.org

Beginning Teachers Toolbox – This site of full of resources for beginning teachers.  It includes links to a survival kit, practical resources, free newsletter, and staff development opportunities.  There is also a link to a mentor teacher page, and a link to a student and parent page, which includes a further link to Yahoologans.  Date visited – 5/31/06.  http://www.inspiringteachers.com/bttindex.html

 

Welcome to Terri Husted’s Homepage! A Homepage for New (And Not So New) Math Teachers – This site is full of really good resources for beginning and experienced middle and high school teachers.  It includes links to Internet lessons in math and science with free downloads, most loved math problems (they are so motivating that I just had to solve some of the problems before going on), classroom management, links to other math sites, and much more.  Although this site is that of an individual, her site won the Golden Web Award (I verified this).  I also read through much of the material on this site and found it to be aligned with current best practices in teaching and learning.  Date visited – 6/01/06.  http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/terri/terri.html

 

The Educators Reference Desk – This is a huge site.  It has 12 categories on the home page, and teaching is only one of them.  There are resources for beginning teachers as well as seasoned teachers, There are tons of lesson plans in all subject areas, and on a variety of topics.  The lessons are leveled by grade (K-12) but you don’t know the level until you open the lesson page.  The site has links to ERIC and GEM to aid users in search and research endeavors.  Date visited – 5/27/06.  http://www.eduref.org

 

Teachers.Net – This site includes a chatboard network where teachers have a wide range of choices for chatting with other teachers – according to grade level, subject area, projects, technology, topic, etc.  Other links include a lesson bank, and a page which provides strategies and approaches to beginning teachers and veteran teachers as well.  Date visited – 6/01/06.  http://teachers.net/mentors/beginning_teachers

 

Teachnology – the Teaching Tips That Work Center – This site includes teaching tips in all subject areas and a lot more.  There are lots of lesson plans in all subject areas.  The PE category has 16 lesson ideas, ranging from behavior management to Field Day activities.  The site includes downloads, teacher tutorials, and has links to many lesson plans for middle and high school teachers in different subject areas.  Date visited – 5/27/06.  http://www.teach-nology.com/ideas

 

 Internet4Classrooms – The purpose of this site is to help teachers use the Internet effectively.  This is a huge site with many really good links.  It was cited in 2 ISTE Publications in 2005-06: 101 Best Web Sites for both Elementary and Secondary Teachers.  It has links to quote of the day, question of the day; brain teasers, and trivia questions in different subject areas.  There is so much on here that would be valuable to so many teachers that I will try to break it down with citation for specific grade levels or subject areas.  The home page has links for teachers, to assessment, tutorials, Daily Dose of the Web, SmartBoard resources, and in-school integration support (effective use of technology in classrooms.  Date visited – 6/01/06   http://www.internet4classrooms.com/index.htm

 

Teacher Resources – Math and Science

 

Mrs. Glossers Math Goodies - This is a good site for math teachers, and includes interactive math lessons, a free math homework help link, and a free math newsletter.  Although there is a CD for purchase on this site, there are many lessons and math puzzles from the CD which are free.   The grade level range for these activities is grades 6 through 9.This site has been reviewed on radio and TV, featured on www.4teachers, and recognized by various web reviewers.  Date visited – 6/01/06  http://www.mathgoodies.com

 

Problem Solving Literacy – This site is promoting problem solving literacy, and has lessons and activities in algebra, physics, and chemistry.  This site is not as easy to navigate as the others on the list, but has some good activities.  The site is for administrators, teachers, students, parents, and other professional. 6/01/06.  http://www.hawaii.edu/suremath/home1.html

 

Physics Question of the Week – This site is presented by the University of Maryland.  A new question is posted on the site every week during the school year.  The questions are archived and available from 2000 to the present.  Each question is actually a physics problem.   The site uses pictures, videos, and other media in presenting the questions, and in showing the solution.  When done in real time, students have to wait several days before the answer is given.  These are very motivational, very interactive Internet learning activities. Internet4Classrooms: Math – This site has an elementary math link and a secondary math link.  You can also link to general math, or you can link by math topic.  Besides the over 100 links to math sites, there is a comprehensive math readiness link, a link to a search engine for math resources, and a link to in-depth algebra help.  The links on this site were verified 5/19/06.  Date visited – 6/01/06.  http://www.internet4classrooms.com/math.htm

 

Internet4Classrooms: Science – This site has links to chemistry, biology, astronomy, physics, and science fairs and projects.  The sites for each of these science disciplines have many links, and the links are categorized.  For example, the biology link is categorized into dissection, animals, rain forests, zoos and museums.  The links for each of these disciplines were verified within the last couple of weeks – physics and science fairs as recent as 5/29/06.  Date visited – 6/01/06.   http://www.internet4classrooms.com/science.htm

 

Think Science – This site has links to online lesson plans that require the student to visit web sites to find the answers to the questions.  The site doesn’t give the grade level of the lessons but they appear to be from grade 3-8 and above.  There aren’t a lot of lessons as are linked to some sites, but a teacher could get ideas for online lessons through this site.  There is a trivia question on the home page, and it keeps changing.  There are many links to other science sites.  Date visited – 5/27/06  http://www.thinkscience.org

 

Teacher Resources – Social Studies and Language Arts

 

Internet4Classrooms: Social Studies – This site has links to general resources, geography, history, and economics.  Each are subdivided; the history site includes African-American history, Jewish history, world history, Revolutionary War, and World War II.  It includes a link to presidents and to presidential libraries, and an additional link to propaganda.  There is a link at the top of the history site to a ten minute presentation on the growth of our nation from 1789-1959.  The link verifications are current.  Date visited – 6/01/06. http://www.internet4classrooms.com/social.htm

 

Who’s Who and What’s What – This is a New York Times web site for teachers of grades 3-12.   There are 5 questions dealing with current events.  The questions are related to articles in the current day’s Times. (The questions change every day.)  There are multiple-choice questions for the students to answer.  Instead of giving the answer, students are directed to read the related article, linked to the site, and find the answer for themselves.  This site would be great for social studies classrooms; it is motivational and timely.  The picture is a nice addition; it is a picture of someone in one of the news stories.  Date visited – 6/01/06.  http://www.nytimes.com/learning/students/quiz/index.html

 

Internet4Classrooms: Language Arts –This site has links to general, elementary, middle and high school, and writing.  The middle and high school site is categorized into the various components of language arts.  There are many internet lesson plans, especially at the middle school level.  This site also has links for teacher resources.  The site claims recent verification of links.  Date visited – 6/01/06. http://www.internet4classrooms.com/lang_mid.htm

Internet4Classrooms: PE and Health – This site is categorized into health, PE, and nutrition/wellness.  There are links to lesson plans, sports, games,  line dancing , and other physical activities.  Although this site has well over a hundred links it isn’t quite as comprehensive as the ones above that are linked from the same site.  Link verification is current.  Date visited – 6/01/06.  http://www.internet4classrooms.com/health.htm 

 

Internet4Classrooms: Art and Music – This is a great site for art and music teachers.  It also includes links to dance and theater.  National art standards are linked to this site.  The really neat thing about the music links is that they include sounds.  There is a series of links for students to identify the songs, making it both interactive and fun.  Date visited – 6/01/06.  http://www.internet4classrooms.com/arts.htm#multi
