Search Engines

Below is a list of search engines that I feel as an educator are the best. I have included five categories of search engines. These categories are: meta, media, image, news, and general search engines.

Meta Searches

This search engine of search engines has a huge variety of features. One can conduct a search to find audio, multimedia, news, web images, and shopping. This search engine of search engines is extremely fast at finding search engines on a particular topic. It also has favorite fetches to save time. Dogpile is very easy to use as well.

This is a very fast meta search engine. Search engines come up with at star ranking system that tells the search conductor how many search engines have the topic listed. One can find sites that have MP3, news, pictures formats.

Media Searches

This search engine has many features. One can conduct a search for video and audio materials and there are usually a variety of results. This search engine is so easy to use. There are parental controls to limit graphic material, so it is great to use with a class of students. Altavista is very comprehensive. There are more than 425 million images listed.

Lycos is extremely comprehensive site. It has pictures, videos, audio, and MP3 formatted material. This search engine is very fast and simple to use. There are also parental controls to oversee activity with students.

Image Searches

There is a huge variety of pictures. One can find illustrations, to artwork, to photographs on promotions for stores or greeting cards. Google is so easy for anyone to use. There are parental controls to censor images to young children.

This site is not only great to use to find audio and visual clips to use, it has an enormous amount of wonderful images. It is so easy to use, and it is super fast. It has a family filter to block out inappropriate graphics.

News Searches

This is a great search engine for students. It is extremely motivating and easy to use with children. There are links to news sites and research sites that are geared to children and teachers.

This is a great search engine to use with students if you want the news fast and easy. Total News has links to all the large news media outlets such as: CNN, Fox, ABC, USA today, etc. The news stories on this site are updated constantly. There are features, sports, world news, business world, and sci-tech news.

General searches

If there is a search engine to go to that is quick, easy and to the point, it is Google. There is such a huge variety of information, images, video, and audio on Google that it is the first place I go to find information on a topic. Students can use it easily and there are parental controls to make it easy to use in the classroom or media center.

Since Altavista is so easy to use and it is so comprehensive, I use Altavista all the time with my students now. Convenience and easy usability make this search engine great to use with children. It is simple for an educator to use this site with students to find information.
