Email Etiquette for 3rd Graders

The following is a list of "dos" in the email world for third grade students. It is important to keep these things in mind when writing and sending email messages. Follow each tip closely, and your readers will understand you!

1.Make sure you have the correct address for the person to which you are sending a message. If it is not correct, you will get a message back into your mailbox just like if you were sending a letter in the mail through the post office. The address should be like the following example: Name@emailprovider.com, net, or org.

2. Make sure you do not write a message that is too long. Many times, your friends will not read them. Keep your messages short, sweet, and to the point.

3. Keep your email messages nice and friendly. When you are upset or in an argument with someone, it is best to work it out on the phone or in person, but not online. That way, there are no hurt feelings.

4. Proofread your letter so that your reader understands what you are trying to say. Nothing is worse than trying to figure out a word that is spelled wrong or poor punctuation. It leads to misunderstandings. Make sure to go to EDIT with your cursor and go to Spelling or Spell Check/Grammar Check. If you do not understand the letter than your reader will not understand it either!

  1. Always greet the person that you are sending a message to and sign your name at the end of your message. Many times, families share email addresses, so it is important to show that the message is to a specific person and it is from you!
  2. Don’t write your message in all capital letters. If you do it LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING!!! It is also hard to read.
  3. Use a smiley face to make sure that your reader understand your message J It makes your sentences nicer if you show that what you say is supposed to make your reader smile. Isn’t it nice to receive a note with a smiley face, rather than just a plain old message? :} :>
  4.

  5. Don’t say anything on email that you would not say in front of others. If you do, than there is no denying it! Someone can print out the email for proof! If you do not want others to know something, do not put it in print!
  6. Do not send a message to a huge list of people. Many times, when the address window shows that an email was sent to a whole bunch of people, others think it is junk mail or spam. They won’t read your message!
  7. Make sure your email address is not too revealing of who you are. Do not put your home address, or phone number in your email address. It is better to be safe just in case your address gets into the wrong hands. Never give your address to someone you do not know. Always check with your parents about having an email address or screen name.
