Exploring Poetry

Haiku

As part of our poetry unit, we will discover a form of poetry called Haiku. It is a Japanese poetry form where certain criterion applies. The poem must have:

5 syllables in the first line
7 syllables in the second line
5 syllables in the third line
topics are celebrating nature or even every day life
poem does not rhyme

Answer the following questions. Do your best!

1. What did the poems have in common?

2. How are haiku poems different than quatrains? How are they the same?

3. Make a list of possible topics to write your own haiku about.

4. Write your own haiku poem. Remember to follow the criteria listed above

for haiku poetry. Illustrate your poem. Be Creative!
