World War II

 

 

This Web Link Bibliography offers important information to Middle School Students and Teachers doing research on World War II.  It is designed to provide overall coverage of the war supplemented by sites covering specific topics.  Sites are organized into five categories.  1. Important Battles and Events – This category includes sites that cover the entire war and links to sites on important specific battles.  2. Important People – This category contains biographical information on some of the key figures of the war.  3. Media and Propaganda – This category contains information on the use of the Media (papers, radio, posters, etc.) for propaganda purposes and war reporting.  4. Ethnic and Social Effects – This category contains sites that detail the war’s impact on certain groups of people.  5. The End of World War II – This category contains sites pertaining to the end of World War II in the Pacific.

 

 

Important Battles and Events

 

 

World War II in Europe – This site contains a timeline of World War II events in Europe.  The timeline begins with the end of World War I, continues through the beginning of World War II, through to Germany’s surrender, and ends with the Nuremberg trials and Hermann Goring’s suicide in 1946.  Many events include links containing detailed information and photographs.

World War II in the Pacific – This site contains a timeline of events with accompanying photos of World War II in the Pacific from the Bataan death march in 1942 through to the Japanese surrender on the Battleship USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.  Some events contain links with more detailed information.  Also included is a map of the Japanese empire in 1942.  The site takes a few minutes to load due to the high number of photos.

Pearl Harbor – Remembered – This site provides information on the Japanese attack on the U.S naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 which prompted America to enter World War II.  Maps of the harbor during the attack, Japanese aircraft routes of attack, and a timeline of events of the battle are included as links on the site.  Also included are audio links containing CBS’s radio news report of the attack and President Roosevelt’s December 8, 1941 declaration of war address.

Battle of Midway: Turning the Tide in the Pacific – This site provides detailed information on the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942.  This site is designed as a series of lesson plans with a table of contents on the first page with links to lessons.  There are instructions for teachers on how to use the lessons, what objectives may be reached and where in the curriculum the activity fits. Readings, maps and images cover the battle including Japanese and American strategies, battle events and eyewitness accounts.  All are followed by questions for students to answer.  An Activities section designed to help students learn how technology has affected warfare and how wars are memorialized completes the site.

Battle of Stalingrad – This site provides information on the Battle over the Soviet city of Stalingrad on the Volga River during 1942 and 1943.  Considered the turning point of the war on the eastern front, Stalingrad was a major defeat for Nazi Germany and the beginning of the long push of Axis forces from Russia.

Normandy: 1944 – This site provides detailed information on the allied invasion of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944.  The site includes information on planning, buildup of forces, paratroop assaults, beach invasions, and the allied breakout.  Links containing biographical information on Allied and German leaders and Generals, maps, charts, video and photo galleries and oral histories are located on the main page.  Also included is an Internet Guide containing links on numerous related topics and a Learning Activities link with role playing and multimedia activities for students.

Important People

 

 

A People At War – This site highlights important contributions made by thousands of Americans, civilian and military, who served our country during World War II.  Included are sections on women who served, the war in Europe, the war in the Pacific, and science pitches detailing the development of the amphibious truck “DUKW” and the inventor of the M-1 Garand rifle.  Links provide information on personal contributions such as African American Doris Miller’s actions during Pearl Harbor, family contributions such as the tragic loss of the five Sullivan brothers, and group contributions such as the 442 Infantry Brigade made up of Japanese Americans.

Time 100: Winston Churchill – This biography from the Leaders and Revolutionaries section of Time Magazines Top 100 provides detailed information on Winston Churchill, Prime Minister and leader of the British Empire during World War II.  Churchill’s youth, military service, political career and military strategy during the war are covered.  Also included is a photo of Churchill and his three appearances on the cover to Time magazine.

Adolf Hitler – This site provides detailed biographical information on Adolf Hitler, leader of the National Socialist Party and dictator of Germany.  The site covers his early years, military service in World War I, rise to power, leadership during World War II, “Final Solution” decision, personal life and death.  Numerous links to related topics on World War II are spread throughout this site with pictures included.  Also included are eyewitness accounts of people who meet Hitler.

Franklin D. Roosevelt – This biography provides detailed information on Franklin D. Roosevelt, 32 President of the United States and leader during WWII until his death on April 12, 1945.  Under Roosevelt’s guidance, U.S. military policy and strategy was formed which lead to Allied victory.  This site contains information on Roosevelt’s youth, political career which included four terms as President, and leadership during the war.  Students should pay special attention to sections titled Prelude to War, World War II at Home, Military Policies, and Wartime Diplomacy.

General George S. Patton – This site provides biographical information on American General George S. Patton from his birth to his death.  Considered by many military analysts as the best allied battle commander in the European theater, Patton’s flaws, accomplishments and acts of personal bravery are detailed in this site.

American Experience: MacArthur – This site provides biographical information on American General Douglas MacArthur from the PBS video “MacArthur”.  Considered the most brilliant American military commander in the Pacific theater, MacArthur’s life and career are presented.  The site contains transcripts from the video including interviews with historians, friends, political figures and military personnel on MacArthur.  Also included are links to a timeline of events in the Pacific theater beginning with Pear Harbor, maps of MacArthur’s military strategies throughout his career, and a teacher’s guide with suggested classroom activities.

Joseph Stalin – This site provides biographical information on Joseph Stalin, head of the communist party and leader of the Soviet Union during World War II.  Known to be a ruthless dictator, Stalin’s youth, rise to power in the communist party, purge of the Red Army, Nazi-Soviet Pact, leadership during World War II and death are detailed.  The site contains links to important related topics with images.  The site also includes eye witness accounts of people who meet Stalin.

Georgy Zhukov – This site provides biographical information on Soviet General Georgy Zhukov.  Considered the most successful Russian general of World War II, Zhukov lead the Russian army to victory in many important battles including the defense of  Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk and Berlin.  The site contains links to important related topics with images.  Also included is a World War II Index link at the bottom of the page where students may find links covering the entire war.

Media and Propaganda

 

 

Propaganda – This site provides a definition of propaganda and a description of how it was used by Nazi Germany to shape public opinion, eliminate dissent, and promote anti-Semitism.  This site includes an anti-Semitic cover article from a German newspaper with analytical questions for students to answer.

Powers of Persuasion: Poster Art from World War II – This site exhibits American poster art used to rally public support for the war.  Posters are organized into two parts.  Part 1 contains posters which appeal to patriotism, unity, freedom, war production and war material conservation.  Part 2 contains posters which play on the fear of defeat.  Posters show the threat to American women and children, the threat of spies and sacrifice for the American cause.  Included in the site is a Audio File link which contains patriotic song, speech video and text.

Ethnic and Social Effects

 

 

The Holocaust: A Learning Site for Students – Sponsored by the U.S. Holocaust Museum, this site provides important information on the “Holocaust”; the Nazi extermination of enemies of the state and people considered racially inferior, especially Jews and Gypsies.  The site contains a table of contents with links detailing the rise of Nazi rule, emergence of Nazi racism towards Jews, the Nazi plan known as the “Final Solution”, establishment and history of the concentration camp system, resistance, and rescue of prisoners.  The site also includes a Holocaust Encyclopedia which provides additional related information and an Educational page with activities for students and resources for Teachers.

Letters from the Japanese American Internment – This site provides detailed information on the Internment of Japanese Americans during World War II.  The site includes a link containing letters and postcards sent to Librarian Clara Breed from Japanese American students in Internment camps.  Also included in the site are Home Movies and Oral History.  Available on the main page are links to a Lesson Plan and additional Resources.

The End of World War II

 

 

Hiroshima: A Survivor’s Story – This site contains the story of Francis Mitsuo Tomosawa, a Japanese American who survived the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and provided an eye witness account of the event.  The site contains a resource page with links to related information such as effects of radiation poisoning on people.  The site also contains questions for students to think about regarding the bombing of Hiroshima.

The Japanese Surrender Document – This site details the Japanese surrender on the Battleship USS Missouri on September 2, 1945 which officially ended World War II.  Included are photos of the “Instrument of Surrender” document and General Douglas MacArthur’s acceptance of the Japanese surrender on behalf of the United States and the Allied Powers.
