I chose the Games Online Activity because I enjoy playing games.  I have played solitaire and free cell on the computer and computer games such as Risk and Age of Empires but I had never played any game on the internet before.  I recently saw part of a poker tournament on ESPN which looked interesting so I decided to try my luck at online poker.  I went to Yahoo Games and found a card game called Hold'em on Pacific Poker.com. http://www.pacificpoker.com/?sr=320598.  After you download the site software you create an ID and then start playing.

At this site you play against other people which is both challenging and fun.  Hold'em is a game similar to 7 card stud in which players bet (or fold if they want to) after each round of cards is dealt.  In Hold'em players are dealt two cards face down.  Bets are placed and then three cards are dealt face up for all players to use.  Bets are placed and then a fourth card is dealt face up.  Bets are placed again and then a fifth card is dealt face up.  Final bets are made and then the best hand wins the pot.  The object of the game is two fold:  1. Create the best five card hand possible using a combination of the cards dealt face down to you and the five cards dealt face up.  2. Extract as much money from the other players as possible during each hand.  Pacific Poker offers new members the option to play with their own money in a real poker area or to play with $1000 of fake money in a free area.  Players can join games in progress at tables in either area..  The tables range from $1-$2 tables up to No Limit-$200 tables.

I chose to play with the $1000 fake money and stayed at the $1-$2 tables.  At first I lost money but as I played more I was able to win it back.  Along the way I learned a few things about Hold'em.  The first lesson I learned is it is important to know when to fold.  If you do not have a good hand and other players are betting the maximum amount allowed each round, chances are you are going to lose.  It's difficult to bluff people when they playing with fake money (duh).  The second thing I learned is you can win more money in a hand by betting small at first.  i.e. You can entice other players to bet more if your opening bet is small.  If they raise the bet, you can raise it again until the limit for that round is reached.  Many players are less likely to fold if they have committed more money to a pot in the early rounds.  Even if their hand is only ok they will stay in because they have invested so much in that hand.  The most important point I learned is that no win is assured until you see the last card.  There is a large element of chance to Hold'em due to the fact that all players may draw from the same five face up cards.  The turn of the last face up card can change an ok hand into a winner.  Your two face down cards are usually the key.  If your face down cards are bad you should fold.

In this site you can chat with other players, which is fun and helps pass time when you have folded and are waiting for the next hand to begin.  Some players had interesting ID names such as Coolhand5 and Cardshark14.  I was surprised to see how popular the game was.  I chatted with players from all over the US and Europe also.  Hold'em is a fun game and I can see how it could become addictive.  So if you play be wary.
