Search Engine Assignment

Questions?  They have answers….  Search Engines for Your Needs

Best General Search Engine: Google’s comprehensive searches are just amazing, it has won the best search engine several times, and it deserves it!  Also search for images, shopping and groups.  All results show the words of your search in the context of the webpage.  10/10 www.google.com

Runner Up: Yahoo! Includes comprehensive search results as well as very helpful sub search categories, or alternatives. Sometimes, I want just a little more though…9/10  www.yahoo.com

Best News Search Engine: Google brings up more articles with the given search words than any other engine I could find.  It includes the sentence of the link that contains the search words.  Google categorizes relevant sites by the most recent date. 10/10  www.google.com

Runner Up: Yahoo! Brought up the second largest amount of relevant articles to the search words.  Results are categorized by date, and the first line of the article is included to read. 9/10  www.yahoo.com

Best Shopping Search Engine: Froogle is by the far the most fun named website for shopping, and the site itself is organized neatly with different ways of listing hits for a searched item.  Pictures are included as well as available comparisons. 8/10  http://www.google.com/frghp?hl=en&tab=wf&q=

Runner Up: Half.com Even though this website is limited to the sale of DVD’s, CD’s, books, textbooks, and electronics, it is powered by EBay and is well worth checking out.  The prices are excellent; quality is described along with other icons that reveal more about where the product is coming from.  7/10.  http://half.ebay.com/index.jsp

Best Kid Safe Search Engine: Ask Jeeves Kids I support the asking of questions, and the ability to answer questions is even better!  Ask Jeeves Kids is a great starting point for kids who want to be a little more independent. Plus the website contains other study tools.  9/10  http://www.ajkids.com/

Runner Up: Yahooligans! Just a fun site for kids to browse when they have the time.  Favorite parts include joke of the day, video clips, and the games category.  Allows kids to be independent on the internet without parents being concerned about questionable material.  10/10.  http://yahooligans.yahoo.com/

Best of the Worst: Northern Light any website that I have to download things in order to start searching is a complete bummer.  I would rather spend energy with other engines and fail, because this just didn’t go anywhere. 1/10 http://www.northernlight.com/

Runner Up: WiseNut provided decent search results, but it was difficult to see how they were relevant to the particular words that were searched.  Also, too many results had a lot unreadable matter in the small blurb that was provided, makes me feel like it could be inappropriate.  3/10  http://www.wisenut.com/
