Franz Kafka and His Father

Before we begin the novel The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka I wanted everyone to have a little background on the author. This link: http://www.kafka-franz.com/KAFKA-letter.htm is a letter that Kafka wrote to his letter, but never sent, and it details many things about their relationship as well as Kafka’s personality. Read from the beginning down to the paragraph that ends with “At least so it seemed to me.” When you are finished, please answer the following questions in your journals that will be collected.

1. What is your opinion of the author? Do you hear his arguments as valid?

2. It must have taken some time to write this letter, why do you think he never sent it?

3. The Metamorphosis is about a change to a member of a household, how do you think this could relate to Kafka and his father?
