Early English Settlements

Introduction

After Europeans explored the New World and claimed land in America, three groups left England to claim America as their new home. You will learn about these three groups and develop an understanding of what makes a successful settlement. The first English settlement was at Roanoke which was not a successful settlement. The other two were at Jamestown and Plymouth; both of these succeeded.

Task

You are a newspaper reporter working for the Spring Garden Gazette. You will be researching information about the English settlements. Your first assignment will be to learn about the Roanoke settlement and find out why it did not flourish. Your second assignment will be to choose one of the other settlements, either Jamestown or Plymouth, and research the information to find out the struggles and hardships these early Americans endured. You will then interview several reporters who have studied the settlement that you did not and gain valuable information about that settlement. Finally, the third assignment will be to compare and contrast the two successful settlements and draw a conclusion as to how the Roanoke settlement may have been successful.

Process

Ø     Have your editor (teacher) select your partner.

Ø     Get a worksheet from your editor and visit the websites for the Roanoke settlement and fill in the worksheet. Indicate where you received your information i.e. what web site or resource. ( History Alive Text, pg. 31) For the web site list the last word of the URL before the HTM.

Ø     Have your editor choose the settlement that you will be researching with your partner.

Ø     Obtain a worksheet from you editor and visit the sites to gather information to fill in your worksheet. Feel free to add any information that may be interesting that you may feel is important. Make sure to record on your worksheet where you found your information.

Ø     Once you have researched your settlement, go to 3 other reporters that had a different settlement and gather information by filling in the worksheet for that settlement.

Ø     Fill in the Venn- Diagram to help you understand the similarities and differences each of these two settlements shared.

Ø     Write your newspaper article explaining what Roanoke should have done to become a successful settlement.
