Interpreting maps of the

 Maryland tribes

3.75 inch brown line ending primary text

There are many tribes that covered the Maryland region. You will examine two maps that were constructed by Captain John Smith. You may know him through the famous story of “Pocahontas.” Captain John Smith was among one of the first settlers to the new colonies in 1606. He traveled from England to the newly settled Jamestown, Virginia. While in the New World he explored the territory in and around the Chesapeake Bay and mapped this region. Click on the URL below to examine the two maps created by Captain John Smith and complete the assignment.

Text Box: Assignment: Record your answers on your Native American worksheet.
Look at the first and second map.
In the first column list the Native American tribes that are listed on the first map. Then in the second column list the tribes from the second map.
Compare the two columns.
What differences do you see between the two columns?
Why do you think there was a difference in the number of tribes from the first map to the second map? Hint: Take notice of the dates when the maps were designed.
Why do you think that the tribes settled near waterways?
