Settlement – Small communities started by people in a new place.

 

Roanoke – This is the name of an island off of the coast of present-day North Carolina, where the English began an unsuccessful settlement in 1587.

 

Jamestown – This is the settlement that was started in 1607 by the English, and is located in present-day Virginia. This was a successful settlement

 

Plymouth – This is the settlement that was started in 1620, by the English called Pilgrims and is located in present-day Massachusetts.
