Kid Safe Search Engines
Kids can use this website for research or assistance with school work. It is mostly an educational web site but there are fun games as well. Kids can ask Jeeves any question then they are given information on the topic and links to sites where they can find other information related to their question. This one was my favorite because I thought it was such a helpful, straight forward resource for kids.
Fact Monster
This is a really neat sight because it provides links to current events e.g. Black History Month and Presidents Day, the Winter Olympics as well as “kid safe” topics of interest like Harry Potter. The first thing I saw when I pulled up the site was a map with ten categories of fact finding fun for kids such as The World, United states, Math quizzes and Games, Science, Sports, Homework Center, People, Sports, Word Wise, and Cool Stuff. The page is easy for kids to use, and very cool to look at!
News Search Engines
My favorite because it is not as cluttered as some of the other news sites. It is well organized, visually appealing and has all the latest news stories at regional and national levels. Quick links to the networks news programs are also available to those interested in tuning in.
MSN
This site has news from around the world, and local news as well. Using My MSN you can customize your page with news, weather, or sports, and choose the layout of your page. The only downfall of this page is that it is a little bit cluttered. My favorite sites are those with out all the flashy advertisements.
Travel Search Engines
For your travel needs, this site has it all. Make travel arrangements for any where in the world. Book your hotel, flight, car, and even pre-plan activities at your destination. Before booking you hotel, open the Travelers Opinions link to get reviews from people who have stayed their recently. Virtual tours of the hotel are also provided. For those of you who have to book last minute trips, check out the Last Minute Flight Values link.
TravelocityThis site is similar to Expedia but I liked Expedia better. Although you can take care of all the details of your trip, I Preferred the layout of Expedia’s site. There are also hotel reviews form travelers, but I had to search for the link and the information found in it was not as detailed as the information n Expedia.com.
Shopping Search Engines
Amazon
This site is not just for books, although you can great deals on both new and used books here. You can purchase everything from this site from gift cards to parts for your car. Once you use this site, it “remembers” what you have purchased and gives you recommendations of other items you might like. There are many free shipping deals, and order tracking is fast and easy. You can also sell your stuff like books, electronics, you name it.
Bizrate
I liked this for site when I am searching for a specific item, but am not necessarily familiar with the merchant selling it. It is a safety net for consumers. The site rates merchants for: overall satisfaction, on time delivery, customer support, and product meeting customer expectations. Based on the many reviews of on-line shoppers, people can decide whether they want to use a particular merchant or not. I have avoided some on-line stores based on the reviews I had read.
