Online Projects for Classrooms Around the World

Average Weight of 10 Year Olds in Different Countries

This project is designed for elementary students to chart the average weight of 10 year olds around the globe. The students begin the project by making a graph to represent the average weight of 10 year olds in their school. They then collect information on eating habits and determine what factors contribute to the different weights. Information is forwarded to different schools to compare data. This project would be useful to elementary teachers of math and science. Date visited: June 7, 2006.

Finding Schools and Students in the U.S.

If you are looking for a collaborative project that will use multiple skills across subjects, this is the project for you! Students will use deductive reasoning skills to locate their fellow project participants in “The Great State Mystery.” To solve this puzzle, students will give out hints about their home state and the surrounding geographic area to hint at their location. This would be a great introductory online collaborative project. It would be suitable for upper elementary students and teachers of all subjects. Date visited: June 7, 2006.

G.A.S.P.: Great Adventures to Scenic Places

This project enables students and teachers to enjoy a year long project that describes a real life adventure of a man who rode his bike to every national park in the contiguous U.S. The website offers problem solving activities that relate to the trip. The site also features activities, contests, videos, photographs, and more. This project would be useful for social studies teachers who teach grades 3-12. Date visited: June 7, 2006.

Pest World for Kids

A wonderful project for children and adults! This activity enables students to study pests such as mosquitoes, mice, spiders, and other types of unwanted visitors. The project will help students determine why pests invade our houses and what we can do to make them feel more unwelcome. This project would be ideal for elementary science teachers.

Date visited: June 7, 2006.

Monarch Butterfly Migration

This project enables students to study the amazing migration patterns of monarch butterflies. Students find out how the butterflies know when to leave, how far and how fast to fly, and when they have reached their destination. This would be a fun and interesting project for elementary school students studying science and social studies. Students will keep journals, record observations, and make their own migration maps. Date visited: June 7, 2006.
