  Bulletin Board Course Module

Objective:

§        Students will use Bulletin Boards as a method of communication to interact and collaborate with others.

§        Students practice responsible use of technology and the Internet.

Introduction:

I know you all know what a bulletin board is.  It’s that big rectangle covered in squishy stuff hanging on the classroom wall.  I hand your work on it.  Of course, you’re right.  That is a bulletin board.  Many of you probably have one at home too.  Some people hand their important papers and their calendar and some people hang their favorite things on one as a decoration.  In my house growing up, its where we left notes for each other about phone calls and upcoming appointments.

That big rectangle hanging on the wall is not the only kind of bulletin board there is.  Bulletin board has become a multiple meaning word just like right (correct, opposite of left) and cool (cold, really neat).  This multiple meaning word has something to do with technology.  Let’s check it out.

Gathering Information and Resources:

The first thing we need to do is find out what the other definition of bulletin board is.  Before we begin our main activity, follow the link to find out!

Bulletin Board Definition

Now that we know what a bulletin board is, we can get to the point of this activity.  We are going to be doing some learning in the future that is going to require you to participate in bulletin boards with other elementary school students.  You need to be ready.

You will learn about proper bulletin board behavior and safety (http://www.kidscom.com/games/isg/isg.html) and participate in a bulletin board.  Then you will be responsible for creating rules of good bulletin board use and writing me a summary of your bulletin board experience.

Activities:

Visit the KidsCom web site.  Read the Tips for Internet Safety and take notes about them.  Then, play the internet safety game.  Now that we know the appropriate behavior for bulletin boards, we can read other peoples ideas and post our own.  Go to KidsCom Chat (http://www.kidscom.com/chat/chat.html) and pick a topic that interests you.  Read at least 5 posts from other kids.  Then, post your own opinion on the subject.  Don’t forget to follow the Tips for Internet Safety.

Assignment:

Now you need to use your notes to create your own set of Tips for Internet Safety.  This will be in a poster form.  You should have four to six tips on your poster.  Make sure your tips are developed enough so that people could follow them.  Use the tips you read as a guideline.  Pick the tips you thought were most important and put them into your own words.  Your poster should be neat and have at least one illustration.  Remember to capitalize and use punctuation.  Organize your poster neatly.  Consider using bullets or numbers.

Your second task is to write a summary of your first bulletin board experience.  What topic did you respond to?  What kind of answers did you read?  Did you enjoy or not enjoy this experience and why?  This should be written on a headed sheet of notebook paper in paragraph form. Be sure to use complete sentences, punctuation, and capitalization.

Submission:

Make sure your name is on both items.  Turn your poster in on the reading table.  Turn your summary in by placing it in the Other work box.
