"Web Dropin 1"
Introduction
Students will engage in activities on Mendalian genetics using an interactive Web-based tutorial.
Students will be able to define, calculate, and explain various aspects of Mendalian genetics.
Information
This activity will allow students to do the following:
Define the terms dominant, recessive, heterozygous, homozygous, genotype, and phenotype
Explain how Mendel derived ratios from his observations
Calculate ratios, by using Punnett Squares
Explain and complete monohybrid crosses
Effectively manipulate the interactive website
Using the information provided at the website, http://www.biology.arizona.edu/mendelian_genetics/mendelian_genetics.html
as well as information provided in class, students will explore the Web-based activities provided on this website. This site has four links to activities, one for monohybrid crosses, one for dihybrid crosses, and two for sex-linked inheritance.
Activity
Students will visit the above website
Read the provided background information about Mendalian genetics
Explore the links provided that offer resources and information
Complete the problem sets provided at the following links from the above website:
Monohybrid cross
Dihybrid cross
Sex-Linked Inheretance-1
Sex-Linked Inheretance-2
When answering questions, be sure to click on the options "Vocabulary," "Tutorial," and "Answer." These options provide explanations about correct answers, visual aides to help solve the problems, and guide students through the correct way to solve the problem using the features of the interactive website.
