Get Into Spring Break Shape!

Web Quest

INTRODUCTION

The fitness level of Americans is dropping quickly, and with this problem comes obesity and other health risks.  Research shows that obesity is at an all time high.  Some say this is a result of technology; children are playing more video games and watching more television rather than participating in physical activity.  Whatever the case, there is one obvious answer that will help these people: physical activity.  Participating in some sort of physical activity can and will help most people become fit, lose weight, gain muscle, and feel better about themselves.  In fact, physical activity benefits everyone, not only those who may have weight problems.  Fitness trainers and programs help guide people in reaching their fitness goals, whatever they may be.  In this Webquest, you will be a part of a fitness team.  With spring break fast approaching, a client has come to your team in need of your help.  You and your team of fitness experts will evaluate your client’s fitness and determine what needs to be done in order for them to meet their goals.

TASK

Your ultimate goal is to develop a four week fitness program that will help get your client into the shape they desire and move them towards a healthier lifestyle.  Before you can do this though, there are a few things that must be done in order to have an effective fitness program. As stated you will be working in a group of three.  This will be your fitness team.  Each person will have their own individual research to do, which will then be combined in order to create the fitness plan.  Your group will use the Internet to learn all the necessary information needed to make a fitness program.  The final outcome of this project will be an effectively planned and well organized four week program, which will be presented to the class in the form of a PowerPoint presentation.

PROCESS

There are many steps that need to be taken before actually creating the fitness plan.  These steps are outlined here and links to the appropriate information are provided for your convenience.  Each step should be included in your PowerPoint presentation with at least one or two slides.

  1. Education and Motivation

In order for your program to be effectively pursued and continued, it is important for you and your client to first understand why fitness is important.  In this first step, you will select the links below to read and learn more about the benefits of regular exercise and the health risks associated with obesity and unhealthy diets.  Each person in the group should do this step.

Ø      http://www.gsu.edu/~wwwfit/benefits.html - this site describes the benefits of physical activity, including aerobic exercise and strength training

Ø      http://www.discoverfitness.com/why_exercise.html - this site goes a step further in describing the benefits of exercise on various aspects of health and well-being

Ø      http://www.weight-loss-diet-i.com/obesity-risks.htm - this link will help you gain a better understanding of the health problems associated with obesity

  1. Evaluation of Client’s Fitness and Goals

This is of course one of the most important steps in developing an effective fitness program.  Each person is different and depending on their health and fitness level, will require a unique personalized fitness program.  First, your group must find a volunteer to serve as your client.  Once a volunteer is found, their fitness must be evaluated.  Your team will first weigh and measure your client; biceps, waist, thighs, and calves should all be measured.  Once this step is done, you will visit http://www.annecollins.com/weight-loss/weight-chart.htm.  This site will help your team determine your client’s ideal weight, their ideal hip-waist ratio, as well as other information that you may find pertinent in developing your fitness plan.

Your team’s next task is to discover your client’s goals.  Your team will take these goals into consideration, along with their evaluation, in determining what components of fitness must be focused on.  These goals may include weight loss, strengthening certain muscles, gaining muscle mass, toning, increased agility and explosiveness, increasing endurance, etc, etc.  In this step you should ask your client simple questions to discover their goals and/or fitness problems.

3.  Understand the Components of a Fitness Program

Your team must now learn about and understand all the components of fitness in order to incorporate them into your program.   To build a general knowledge, visit http://www.hoptechno.com/book11.htm and read under the “Knowing the Basics” section.  This section not only lists each part of a fitness program that should be focused on but also gives a clear definition of each component.  The components listed here should be a part of your team’s fitness program and should be included in your presentation.

  1. Develop a Fitness Plan

In this step, you will assign each individual member of your team a certain role.  The roles are described below.

Muscular Strength and Muscular Endurance Expert- This person will develop the resistance training aspect of the program, focusing on increasing muscular strength, mass, and endurance.

Cardio Respiratory Expert- This expert will be the aerobic exercise coordinator.  Aerobic and cardiovascular exercise increases the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to the body’s tissues, which increases stamina and your body’s ability to perform regular exercise.

Flexibility- This person will develop exercises to increase and maintain a healthy range of motion for muscles, tendons, and joints.  This will reduce the toll that exercise takes on the body.

Your team will now visit http://www.discoverfitness.com/How_to_get_started.html, which will guide you in developing a routine in each of the categories listed above.  Make sure to read about and include the three variables (frequency, intensity, and duration) that should be considered in all exercise plans; they are defined on this page.   This will help you determine how to vary and change your exercises over the course of the fitness plan.

Your presentation should also include a small section on nutrition information, as this is a vital part of any proper fitness program.  Your team will work as a whole to create this part and it should include information about daily calorie intake, dieting, etc.   The following page should help you in this task: http://www.netrition.com/rdi_page.html.

  1. Evaluate Your Plan’s Effectiveness

The final step in your project will be to determine the effectiveness of you plan.  Is your client reaching their goals? Are they losing weight? Do they have more energy?  Are they better able to exercise?  Do they have more energy and stamina?  Since your client will not actually be expected to follow your fitness plan for four weeks or at all, this section should contain all the necessary question and tests that can be used to determine if your plan would actually be working.  Please visit the following site, which will help you determine how well your plan is working: http://www.clickforcare.co.uk/members/lifestyle/f_evaluation.htm.
