Lesson Plans on the Web

PE Central – This site is an excellent source of physical education information.  In particular, this site excels at providing lesson plans for physical education teachers.  Pecentral.com has one of the most comprehensive collections of lesson plans on the web.  There is a lesson plan link on the welcome page, allowing users to quickly navigate to the lesson plan page.  Once there, teachers have many options to find what they need.  They can perform a general search of all plans, or specify by selecting different categories, such as grade levels.  After selecting a category, users can select a subcategory or see all the lessons in that category.  Teachers can also share their own plans on this site, which is updated often.  I was particularly interested in a few categories.  My first priority was the middle school section, since that is where I plan to teach.  I found enough plans for each topic to make this website well worth the visit.  The plans are well organized, with the grade level displayed so that users can find what they need quickly and efficiently.  In addition to the grade level categories, this site provides other categories such as “instant activities” and “holiday.”  Teachers may find these very useful at various times of the year.

The Lessons Plan Page – This site claims to have over 2000 lesson plans.  They offer plans in every subject.  The first page allows the user to choose their desired subject, after which they can choose the appropriate grade level.  All the plans in that subject and grade level are then shown, usually broken down into categories.  For PE/ Health, there are many plans available in each grade level.  These plans are broken down into various subcategories.  There is a small description given; after selecting this description, the grade level and plan are displayed.  The lessons and their depth vary depending on who submitted them.  At times, it seems these lessons can be a hit or miss deal, but teachers can get many good ideas nonetheless.  This site also provides many plans that integrate other subjects, such as math or language arts, into PE/Health.

The PE Zone – This is an interesting site and resource for PE teachers.  The front page allows the visitor to select what category of plans they are looking for.  There are a few different ways the plans or ideas are presented.  Some of the links forward the user to a video, where they can see the activity rather than read it.  I like this idea because sometimes it is difficult to fully understand a certain activity through a written description.  The majority of plans are written in the regular format, with a clear purpose, materials, and description.  The grade level for most plans is also given.  Again, this is not the most formal or thorough site in terms of the way the plans are written, but there are many new and interesting ideas in those lessons that teachers will find useful.

Learn NC – Many lesson plans are available at this well organized site.  This is a great resource for teachers of all subjects.  Users can either search the database or select a grade level and subject area.  Health/PE teachers will be happy to find a large number of plans in each grade.  While this site does offer physical education plans, it excels more in the health area.  The plans are well written and very thorough.  Everything from purpose to motivation to assessment is clearly described, making it easy for teachers to incorporate the lessons into their curriculum.  Most links to the plans forward the user to the external sites where the plans are located.  With many schools now requiring PE teachers to also teach health, this site serves as a great resource for PE teachers of all grades.

The Educator’s Reference Desk – This site offers PE plans for all grades.  The plans are well organized into categories.  Teachers can select from team sports, games, and even motor skills.  Upon selecting a category, you are taken to a list of the plans and grade level in that category.  The plans are very thorough, supplying the teacher with all the critical elements of a good plan.  To make it easier, teachers can select a printer friendly version of the plan.  Teachers can also submit their own plans to share with their peers.  The plans are not categorized by grade level but the grade level is clearly displayed after a category is selected.  There are quite a few middle school PE plans that I found interesting and these plans contain all the elements and more of a well written lesson.

Physical Education Lesson Plan Page – This page has large number and variety of plans and ideas for physical education teachers.  They are not as organized as some other sites but nonetheless teachers can browse through the plans to get ideas for their own units.  I would consider the links on this site more as ideas than full plans.  The descriptions vary in length and thoroughness and some are obviously better than others.   Teachers looking for some new and interesting activities or games should visit this page and browse through the links to see if they are suitable for their unit and grade level.  The plans are for all grade levels, with a good number being for middle school age children.
