GRAPHING
WEBQUEST FOR 5TH GRADE MATH

INTRODUCTION
How are you different from other students in the class?
How are you the same as other students in the class?
Think beyond what you look like.
How about students in other countries?
How are their lives the same and different from yours?
Graphs are an excellent way for comparing similarities and differences.
TASK
What you will do is:
- Create a Bar Graph on the computer, using information from a website,
to compare schools in the USA to schools in 5 other countries.
- Create a Line Graph from the class reading survey you took yesterday.
- Analyze the data to draw conclusions.
PROCESS
Before starting this webquest you will need:
- Three sheets of paper
- A pencil (and colored pencils if you choose)
- The reading survey you took in class yesterday
Part 1:
Step 1:
Learn about children from other countries.
Read the information on the website: EDUCATION
AND SCHOOLS IN OTHER COUNTRIES.
On a piece of paper, make a two column table with the heading labels
"Country" in column 1 and "School Days" in column 2.
Select 5 countries from the website to enter onto your table. Try
to select countries where the number of days attending school are not
similiar.
Fill in the data for the name of the country under column 1 and the
number of days attending school under column 2.
Step 2:
to use your data from the table to create a Bar Graph . Be sure to choose
the option to print the Bar Graph before exiting the website.
Step 3:
Analyzing the bar graph you printed, in what country would you like
to attend school? Give a reason to support your answer. Write
your answer on the bottom of the Bar Graph page.
Part 2:
Step 1:
Create a table on a piece of paper to organize the data your have collected
from your classmates in yesterday's survey. For help, you may click
HERE for an
example.
Step 2:
to use your data from the table to create a Bar Graph . Be sure to choose
the option to print the Line Graph before exiting the website.
Step 3:
Analyze the Line Graph that you printed. Answer the following question
on the bottom of the page.
What is the difference between the most time spent reading and the
least?

CONCLUSION
I'm sure you've learned a lot from this activity. Before handing in
your tables and graphs, you will have the opportunity to share what you've
learned. In your assigned groups, discuss the similarities and differences
in graphs.
