There are a few reasons why I prefer some search engines over others.  First, I like a search engine that will highlight the words I’ve chosen to search. It also needs to highlight the hits I’ve already visited.  It needs to be easy to read and easy on the eyes.  Below are a few search engines and search directories I found useful. Please be sure to review all Internet information before sharing it with students.

Google is designed to provide a simple, fast way to search the Internet for information. Offering users access to an index comprising more than 4 billion URLs, Google is the largest search engine on the World Wide Web.

The Search Engine Guide

Internet search engines are categorized by topic in the searchable directory of general and specialty search engines. Also listed are resources and tools for exploring the deep web, performing advanced research, and for learning about using search engine tools and technology. There are currently 3157 search engines listed in this database.

 

Kid Friendly Search Directories & Engines

Yahooligans

This is a great search directory for students. They may use key words or the subject index to search topics.

Ask Jeeves for Kids

This is also great for kids.  Kids ask questions and Jeeves directs them to the answers. It gives kids study tools and news resources.

 

 

News and Media Search Engines

News Index is a great way to stay on top of current events and up to the minute news, their catalog currently indexes over 250 newspapers and news sources from around the world.

Access top 100 news papers in America as well as international news, News wires, magazines, and TV Networks.

 

Reference Search Engines

Statistical Resources on the Web

Search Federal Government, Foreign, and International, documents in the news, politics, and other statistical information.

Refdesk.com

Refdesk indexes and reviews quality, credible, and current information-based sites and assists readers in navigating these sites.

A great site for teachers and educators. Awesome Library organizes the Web with 25,000 carefully reviewed resources, including the top five percent in education.
