Collaborative Projects for the Classroom

Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger -  This collaborative project can be used for the primary, intermediate and secondary levels.   The project is based around hunger in the world and the main goal is to make children aware of the growing problem.  There are many different activities on the website.  Classes can participate throughout the entire year.  Students are encouraged to participate in creating a hunger-free world.  A great way for a classroom to get involved in a worldwide conversation about a terrible problem. -   http://www.feedingminds.org/

ExplorA-Pond – A wonderful science based collaborative learning project for students in grades K-12.  Classrooms can adopt a pond in the area, study it, and post the continuous findings on this website.  This project is a great way for children to learn about nature and the complex life of a pond.  Students can learn about other classrooms’ ponds or can chat with fellow pond explorers on Pond Talk.  - http://www.uen.org/utahlink/pond/

The Day I Was Born – This project is fun and different.  Elementary aged students can learn about the day that they were born in history.   What other exciting events occurred on your birthday?  They can meet other students that share their birthday as well.  I can imagine that students would get very excited doing this project.  It is an interesting way to look at history and important dates from the past. - http://www.stphilipneri.org/teacher/dayiwasborn/

If you Could Take Someone to Dinner… - This project will enlighten students to think about people that they admire in their own lives.  Students are asked to choose a historical figure, a hero, and a local hero to bring to dinner.  Students are asked to practice their writing skills and teachers are encouraged to plan a dinner of some kind at their school.  A very interactive, fun project! - http://www.millennium.scps.k12.fl.us/myweb3/dinner.html

Alphabet Adventure Gallery – A great website for pre-school aged children.  This project is designed for children to explore the alphabet sounds and create ways to remember and practice them.  Classrooms can create their own alphabet gallery or classroom web page.  Children can also look at other student’s work.  A wonderful way to get younger children familiar with the Internet and computer. - http://www.qesn.meq.gouv.qc.ca/ccdb/aag/en/index.php

The Roaming Gnome – This project was a little difficult to figure out at first, but once I got it I found it to be very unique.  Children must follow the gnome on his travels each month trying to determine where he is by looking a clues and reading blogs.  This is a fun distance-learning project for children to participate in.   Hint:  To begin with each month, students must click on the image gallery location for the particular month.  This will give them the clues they need to decide where the gnome might be. - http://www.novemberlearning.com/blogs/gnome/archive/2005/09.aspx

Grandmother and Me – This project is a lovely activity for young children to get involved with.  In this particular project students can celebrate time with their grandmothers and learn about grandmothers from around the world.  Children can learn about other cultures and can write stories about time spent with their own grandmothers. - http://www.kidlink.org/KIDPROJ/grandmother/

Classroom Pet Exchange – This distance-learning project is great for elementary aged children.  Students love to tell their friends and teachers about the pets that they own.  This is a great way to do it on the Internet.  Children will be able to learn about other pets and exchange stories.  Teachers can find great pet activities on the site and can easily register their class for the project. - http://208.183.128.8/cpe/

Cities of Today, Cities of Tomorrow – An awesome project for students in grades 4-12.  Many of the activities in the project can be altered for younger classrooms as well.  This project is about cities and their basic development.  Students will learn about cities around the world and the significance of each.  The website is easy to follow and looks like it can be used in many different subjects. - http://www.un.org/cyberschoolbus/habitat/index.asp

Journey North – This website is beautiful to look at and easy to navigate.  The project is actually a series of seasonal projects in one.  All grade levels can use this website, but elementary level children would probably benefit most.  This project is about animals and nature.  Their hibernation and navigation patterns can be explored and studied.  Children can also report or view sightings of particular animals on the project sitings board.  - http://www.learner.org/jnorth/
