Planning a Trip on Travel Web Sites

Objective:

Students will be able to access the Internet and research web sites in order to cost effectively plan a vacation, while improving Internet research skills, overall computer knowledge, and utilization of technology.

Introduction:

During your academic years, you spend a lot of time using technology and the Internet; however, most assignments are in alignment with course objectives and are of little interest to you.  Now is your chance to enhance your computer skills, while researching a topic of interest.

This activity is designed to improve your attitude toward Internet research activities.  The Internet offers an array of valuable information; however, too often students become turned off by computers because they associate them solely with academic affairs.

This activity will improve computer research skills, while engaging students!

There are countless travel sites on the Internet and each one promises to give the best deals.  How do consumers know who to trust and what sites to access?  You will be aiding consumers by ranking the top 5 travel sites and listing 5 additional recommended sites.

Activity:

Choose a destination!  You may travel anywhere in the world with up to 5 other passengers; however, you must plan the trip.  After choosing your destination and exact travel dates surf the Internet and find at least 10 different travel web sites.

Access different sites to find cheap prices on flights and hotels.  Look for package deals and inexpensive travel options.  You are on a tight budget, so you need to find a cost effective trip.

Enter different words or phrases on search engines.  For example, travel, vacation, cheap trips, etc.

Suggested sites:

www.expedia.com

www.cheapflights.com

www.travelocity.com

www.flycheap.com

Assignment:

First, describe your vacation.  Where are you going?  When are you going?  How many people will be traveling?

After reviewing 10 travel sites, get exact quotes on your trip, including flight and hotel.  Rank the top 5 travel sites in order.  Explain why you recommend that site and quote the exact prices.

For the next 5 sites, you do not need to give as much detail, just list the web address.
