Letter:
Dear
Parents,
The Internet is a very important part
of education. I, as a teacher, like to include
Internet lessons during my instruction.
There are rules and guidelines for myself and students to follow. I would like to share these guidelines with
you.
According to Frederick County Public
Schools, an elementary student is not allowed to be on the Internet without
adult supervision. Students at
Hillcrest Elementary cannot log onto the Internet without a password. Only the teacher and other adults know the
password. Students can get on the
computer without adult supervision but again cannot log onto the Internet. Frederick County also states that students
and parents need to sign a Student Internet Contract for students to use the
Internet. This is a contract and it
cannot be binding for students because they are minors. Parents are ultimately responsible for the
wrongdoing on their child’s behalf.
This is why parents must also sign the contract.
In second grade, I do not allow
students to explore the web. Students
do research but they use web pages that I have checked out and marked. I try to find pages that do not contain
popup ads or allow students to leave the page they are on. I do not normally log students onto the
Internet. I will make a link to a web
page on a Microsoft Word document. This
allows students to go into Microsoft Word and click on the Internet
address. They will then be taken to
that site. Even though I look for sites
that do not allow students to leave the page they are on, some websites have
search bars and popup adds that students can click on. These search bars and popup ads allow
students to explore the Internet. In
case of this problem, students and parents must sign the Student Internet
Contract. In the classroom, we will
discuss and practice what to do on the Internet. Students will understand how to get into and out of
situations.
Thank you for all of your help and
understanding. If you have any
question, please feel free to call me.
Thank
you,
Heather
