Elective Activity: Virtual Fieldtrips

A Tour of Space

Space Shuttle Launch

First thing the do to go to space is to launch off in a shuttle.  This site has a simulation of a shuttle launch off.  It allows the students to become the commander or crew on a space shuttle.  It also explains what steps are taken to launch the shuttle.  There is also a simulation of a shuttle landing to end the tour of space.

Space Station

Living in Space

A tour of space will take a long time.  Astronauts will not be able to live on a shuttle the whole time.  They will need to live on a space station.  This site has a simulation of a space station.  The students need to answer questions to make the space station inhabitable.  The site gives short and interesting bits of information about living on a space station.  There are three missions to complete to get the commanders certificate.  This site might be hard for young students to complete on their own.

The Sun, Moon, and Planets

The Solar System

We need to start our tour of space with the sun.  Star Child is a wonderful site to go on a tour of the planets.  This site has real pictures of the sun, moon, and planets.  It also has information students can understand.  There are two levels to this site.  The first level is for younger students.  The second level is for older students.  The second level includes videos for students to watch.  The site also offers a printable version of the information given about each planet.

Universe Tour

Galaxy Tour

After touring the planets, it is time to tour the universe.  This Discovery site tours the universe.  It has information on the Milky Way, Clouds, Andromeda, Virgo, and Hubble Deep Field.  There are great pictures on this site.  The information might be hard for younger students to read on their own.  There are also questions that students asked at the end of each page.  The students can listen to the author’s reply to the questions.
