Text Box: Teacher Made Websites

1.   Created by Mrs. McGowan, 1st and 2nd grade Spring Lake, NJ

This website is fantastic for the purpose of students working on activities directly online. There are at least 10 different ILA (language) interactive activities that students can work on in a group or independently for more help.  There are also websites that she has used to develop these lessons, i.e. quia and quizlab.  She has also borrowed some great sites from other teachers that are quite useful. Also, which is the best part, has links to  tons of other teacher made websites for 1st and 2nd grade -> wealth of information!

Commendations :

a.   not only did she give you the lessons and activities but she tells you how to create

    your own

b.     organization is easy to follow according to subject area

c.     is very user friendly and she really focuses on the teacher who is viewing her

website and trying to help others

Recommendations:

a. many of the sites she suggested are costly and require a membership, however,

there are a few with a 30-day trial.

                b. She had made a powerpoint lesson on  Vocabulary words that I would have

enjoyed viewing but the site was unavailable.

c.    I do not think she has updated the website in awhile which would be nice to see

additions or updates to how the lessons went or how she uses them in the classroom

2.   Created by Mrs. Adcox in 1st grade at Chattanooga Valley School.

Her website is set up a little different and may be more geared toward the parent of that student in the class. On the left hand column is a list of links that include, calendar of the school year, school lunch, grading scale, school supplies list, birthdays, dolch words, the Georgia curriculum and many, many more. Below these links are lessons and activities for each subject. Under every category are links for activities to print out and use.

    Commendations:

a.   I think she has really hit the nail on the head for any parent interested in their

child’s activities at school as well as getting them involved at home

b.     Organized in a way that is very helpful and easy to follow along to always have

an index on the left hand column

c.     You can see the dedication that has been put into the site, which really makes

her involved in her students and her job

        Recommendations:

a.   The music that plays in the background just does not seem appropriate for a first

grade website, it also distracts the viewer (in my opinion)

b.     I think the layout could be more appealing, in terms of font and layout.

Everything is just listed and in small font. I would like to see more involvement

especially since I know 1st graders have that creativity

c.     Perhaps if she could involve the students in her website and not just the parents,

the website would be a great place for parents and students to spend some time

to practice new skills and really get involved outside the classroom.
