Objective: In technology standard 1.b., ISTE states under, Technology Operations and Concepts, that “Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts by demonstrating continual growth in technology knowledge and skills to stay abreast of current and emerging technologies. So in this activity they will be able to save different web sites in their favorites file, so they know how to use it and can refer to it quickly, later.
Introduction: As a teacher, there are many web sites that you will revisit or wish that you remembered the address to. One way to get back to these sites quickly is to create a list of favorite web sites. When you do this, though you need to be very organized so you can access the information quickly. You will need to create folders to stay organized, as well as, renaming the sites so you remember what information the site holds.
Activity: In this activity, you will need to go online and find 20 sites that are relevant to your life as a teacher. You may order books all the time so you might want to go to some sites like Scholastic and other book ordering companies. Or maybe you are an English teacher and you will need to reference poetry sites. Whatever it is that you like, you need to make at least three folders to put the topics in. In order to save a site as a favorite, you will to go to the site and then on the toolbar you will right click favorites one time and then right click Add. Once you have done that, a screen will pop up that says name and it will give you a name that the computer has predetermined for that site. You must change the name to something that is meaningful to you or will help you remember what site it was that you are saving. Then you will click OK. When you have done that with all your sites, you will click on favorites again, but click on organize this time. It will have options like create folders, modify folders, etc. You will create folders with appropriate titles and then move the files into them by clicking and dragging them to the folders that you have created.
Assignment: For this assignment you must collect twenty sites and save them as favorites. Give each site a useful name and then create folders to put the sites in. Make sure that there are at least three folders and that the sites are useful to you in your teaching career.
Submission: Your favorites are saved to your computer, so in order to submit this activity, you will create a Word document. In the document you will create an outline of the folders and sites that you have created. Each of the sites needs to be hyperlinked to the actual activity. You will not need to give descriptions of the sites, the name you have given the site should be enough of a description. When the assignment is complete, it should be uploaded to the McDaniel server. Be sure to send your instructor an email with a hotlink to your assignment.
