Density

As we begin looking at the concept of density we will go through an interactive Internet investigation.  Go to the interactive density site (URL http://ippex.pppl.gov/interactive/matter/density.html) and read about density by going through the interactive site using the arrow button in the lower right corner that looks like this:

Part I

Answer the following questions before performing the interactive lab.

  1. Is density a chemical or physical property?

  1. In what unit is density measured?

  1. What is a mathematical equation for density?

  1. Do thinks more dense than water float or sink?

Part II

Once in the lab complete the following chart.  Make sure that the density of water is set on 1.0 g/cc for the liquid in the pail.  Measure the volume by placing items in the graduated cylinder.  Measure the mass of objects by placing them on the balance.

Material

Volume (mL)

Mass (g)

Density (g/mL)

Float or sink

Pink rectangle (small)

5.  Adjust the density of the pail to 2.0 g/cc.  List the materials that will now sink in the pail.
