Gene Gregory SLM521 Fall 2003
This dropin meets the requirements for SLM 521 a graduate course taken at Western Maryland college. This "dropin" lesson is based on a three day exercise. I will briefly explain the activities for days 1 and 2 and then day three should meet the requirements for the course. Each exercise should only take the student 30 minutes to complete.
Discussion: There are predominately 2 theories which attempt to explain the migratory patterns and the consequential evolution of hominids to modern man. By performing the activities of these 3 assignments you will be able to determine which theory you best support.
Day 1
Activity: Obtain a copy of the world map from your teacher or print a
map
of the world. Print out and complete the assignment Fossils
and Migration Patterns in Early Hominids. The discussion questions will
be due for homework and will be addressed as a warm-up activity tomorrow.

Day 2
Purpose: The students will be able to defend his/her opinion of one of two theories that explain Early Human evolution
Activity: Read the 1994 article from TIME magazine How
Man Began by Michael D. Lemonick which discusses 2 theories of Human evolution.
Based on this information and the map that you created yesterday, decide which
theory do you support "Out of Africa" theory or the "Multi-regional
Hypothesis"?

Day 3
Purpose: The students will be able to make a value based judgment on hominid evolution based on the assigned article, video and map.
Activity: View the online video Becoming Human. Which theory does
the video support?
Write a brief summary explaining to me the basis of the two theories learned
in these 3 assignments. Include which theory you support and give me three
reasons defending your opinion.

Extra credit: Go online and find two recent articles which support your
opinion.
