Connection with the Library Community

ARTIFACT: Professional Journals & Small Book Order

REFLECTION:

FICTION & NON-FICTION & WEBSITES & SOFTWARE & PROFESSIONAL JOURNALS & MAGAZINES & VIDEO/AUDIO/DVD's & SEARCH ENGINES & LESSON PLANS & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The list goes on and on. How can one person keep up with the ever changing technology, the newly published materials, the myriad of items necessary to develop and maintain an efficient and stimulating school library program? Connecting with the library community through professional associations and journals is the most essential method to elicit professional growth. Through this method, the LMS has access to the vast knowledge provided by experts in the school and public library arena. Professional journals such as School Library Journal and Library Media Connection are two examples of journals that inspire the LMS with new ideas, tips and timely articles not to mention providing quality reviews of print and non-print materials. Booklist, just one facet of the American Library Association, is also an excellent source for selecting materials. This list goes on and on as well. The professional journals I have selected - SLJ, LMC, Booklist, VOYA, and Science/Books & Film - are five of the most accurate and quality journals that I have worked with in the past three years. These sources are specifically the sources I use for creating book orders such as the small book order. I look forward to becoming a member of ALA and YALSA as soon as I am a practicing media specialist. Reading and using a variety of quality professional journals and activating a membership in professional associations will not only enrich the professional growth of the LMS and create a support system for the LMS, but ensure that the school library media program is a success for the entire learning community.
