OBJECTIVE 1

Efficient and Ethical Information-Seeking Behavior

ARTIFACT: Research Handbook

REFLECTION:

"I love it! I wish my daughter had this in high school!" - Mrs. Robertson, 8th grade Reading Teacher, Glenwood Middle School

Imagine my enjoyment after seeing the look in my collaborating teacher's eyes. I knew that I had created a valuable tool for the dreaded research project. By compiling a variety of effective strategies to locate, evaluate and use information, I knew the students would have a stronger chance for success. In order to locate research materials, the handbook offers suggestions such as the media center, public library and specific databases such as Yahooligans, Gale Research Center and SIRS. In order to evaluate information, t research handbook provides a checklist for evaluating websites. And finally, in order to use the information, the handbook provides organizing strategies for notetaking and outlining. The research process can prove to be intimidating. Breaking down the process into manageable chunks such as Task Definition and Information Seeking Strategies and then including passwords to research databases, the research handbook becomes a portable and permanent resource. The guide to citing sources supports legal and ethical practices with which all students should be familiar. The students will have hands on access to reference services that are comprehensive, both traditional and electronic. The research project can be an experience that inspires the student if the resources are accessible and the method manageable.
