Journal Review #1

Author Jonathan Matthews makes a strong case for applying computers in art education. In his article Computers and Art Education, he briefly explains reasons why computers were not embraced from the beginning. He starts to pursued the reader in the second paragraph. The author states numerous reasons to employ computers in the art room. He begins with an eye opening statement that computers are now easy to use. Computers were once confusing to ordinary people, but now come “plug and play”. The author also give reasons such as relevance, interest, status, collaboration and professional development, internet use, creativity, experimental medium, and key to commercial employment. These are all reasons for computer use in the art room.

Throughout my education, my experience with computers has been little to none. I would initially think of computers as foreign and complicated. It would not be my first choice of medium or tool in the art room. Therefore, the author’s first statement is influential. User friendliness makes computers an asset to the classroom and the educator. Also as an educator, professional development is a must. Computers can provide growth for the educator, the student, and the artist. Educator’s can find lessons over the internet. They also have access to educators that never would have been at their disposal before. Computers open up a new stimulating world to anyone who uses it. I find it very interesting that anyone can put an image on the computer and alter it without damaging the original. This is a great tool in the art room. I always struggled with experimentation. I did not want to destroy my artwork by trying something new or different. Computers take away that threat. Whenever a student or artist can experiment, creativity will result. Creativity is a goal all art teachers strive for in their students. Although the author gives compelling reasons for the use of computers, I wish he discussed problem areas. Many questions come to mind after reading this article. What are some downsides to computers? Even though computers are user friendly, they can be difficult as an artist’s medium.
