As a classroom teacher, I have always made book recommendations to my students, but perhaps never with more confidence than since taking the children’s and young adult literature classes at McDaniel. These courses have allowed me to immerse myself in the latest and best literature available to these audiences. In fulfillment of the requirements for these classes, I have read and evaluated more than 150 critically acclaimed books ranging from classic family and friendship themes to some of today’s hottest topics like body image and immigration. Though it takes time and energy to keep current with such an abundance of good material, it has truly been a labor of love. There is nothing more rewarding than finding just the right book to “turn on” a reluctant reader. It’s music to my ears when a student says, “Mrs. Floyd, I loved that book! What else can I read?”
Reading webs are a great way to help students self select “that next great book.” By identifying specific themes and providing a list of related titles, webs can direct students toward additional books that meet their interests. The reading web for A Step from Heaven recommends several titles that deal with multicultural and familial issues facing young adults. In contrast, the web for One Fat Summer identifies other books related to such diverse topics as bullies, adolescent humor, and body image. Both webs also list additional titles written by the same author. As a media specialist, I look forward to reading more great books and creating additional reading webs aimed at helping all of the students find that “just right book” to make their day happier.
